I'm wondering what Linux distros my fellow soylentils use, and why.

I myself have loved Fedora since version 7, and never cared much for Debian systems. My desktops either run Fedora or a source-built XFCE system. What distros do you use, what architectures, and why do you use them? Are there any distros you wish were still around?

But I run Windows 7. I work in an environment where the best tools for what I do are Windows based. It's not about what is the best OS, it's about what the right tool for the job is. For me, it's Windows 7. Now, on my laptop, still running CrunchBang. My daughter has commandeered it. If I ever get it back it's going to get Debian with I3wm instead.

I also run Win7 90% of the time. At work it is mandated. At home, CAD software and many games need it.

I do run and suggest Peppermint http://peppermintos.com/ [peppermintos.com] for any Linux needs. It runs a custom LXDE install that is very slick, and depends largely on web apps so the install is small and polished. I suggest checking it out for anyone who hasn't used it before; it is relatively unique and turnkey so testing it even in a VM is easy.

I use Win 7 on my desktop 100% of the time. My laptop is dual boot and I use linux maybe 75% of the time as it is nicer to my battery (windows does an insane amount of intensive background tasks that rev my fan up). My media server is Ubuntu as I like to spend less time tinkering/compiling/configuring software and more time watching movies.

That's the problem with the "workplace" - it has become so entangled with Microsoft Windows that nothing else can take its place. But good on you for running something else at home. Until the corporates "get it" and stop feeding fees to Redmond,....
Wassup (in other news) with MicroSoft giving a huge $$$ to Linux / OSS .. buying brownie points, or control?

    "But I run Windows 7."

You can't start a conversation on most popular forums about Linux without Microsoft and/or Windows people popping up first in the comments. This is especially true on buck feta.

The same is true for a lot of the real life events where actual people meet and talk about FOSS, Microsoft's almost always in the wings.

The smooth operator posts usually start or end with, "I really like Linux, but I use Windows X"

The one hit wonders will just throw in some outdated talk like, "Well who wants to use the command line all the time?" or most favorably, "My grandma can't learn and/or use Linux!"

Wherever you go, Microsoft and sock-puppet apologetics are there.

"I'm wondering what Linux distros my fellow soylentils use, and why."
