I'm wondering what Linux distros my fellow soylentils use, and why.
I myself have loved Fedora since version 7, and never cared much for Debian systems. My desktops either run Fedora or a source-built XFCE system. What distros do you use, what architectures, and why do you use them? Are there any distros you wish were still around?

My old Win7 laptop died a hardware death, and now I am using a cheap laptop running xfce on Linux Mint. For the most part thought, I use this laptop as a terminal and vnc viewer for my work on analysis servers running CentOS or Ubuntu. However, for writing, I use MS Word in Windows 7. If Libre office could preserve .doc track changes in the same format as Word, then I could dump it, but track changes is critical in collaborations.

Uhm, have been using libre/openoffice track changes for years with doc and docx, and nobody ever complained about about it (equations are sometimes a problem, but I usually just ignore their questions about that).
So what is the problem you are seeing?

I distinctly remember several months ago opening up a document with changes which would not transfer between programs.
I just tested it though and you are right. Tracked changes were preserved. Now I'm a bit confused.

I think what does not work is highlight a few words, and attach a comment to the highlighted section. Comments can only be inserted at a position with no highlighting. Not 100% sure about this though, and I think this works in the latest betas for 5.0.

Office 2010 and below work in WINE, just fyi.

Well, they kind of work. I've been running it Wine, and sometime sits fine, and then there is a doc that just wont open or Office just crashes after a few minutes.

Hmm. I've been running it in an old Crossover Office install from Flock the Vote. If you don't want to buy Crossover, PlayOnLinux has similar customization scripts that might help with the stability.

I use PlayonLinux. Again, this is just on some files, maybe files which were also saved by Word in Mac.
