I'm wondering what Linux distros my fellow soylentils use, and why.

I myself have loved Fedora since version 7, and never cared much for Debian systems. My desktops either run Fedora or a source-built XFCE system. What distros do you use, what architectures, and why do you use them? Are there any distros you wish were still around?

Even with gnome-fallback (/flashback) there's a LOAD of processes that launch for silly stuff like "Backup Reminder"

I'm beginning to wonder if it's better to start with Ubuntu Server and add just what's needed for the desktop - but, even then, if you install a rolled-up desktop package, you get all this cruft.

Is there any way to get Gnome under Ubuntu without the cruft?

I fixed all that too. I use synaptic so all the update notifications, backups, etc. are gone.
