I'm wondering what Linux distros my fellow soylentils use, and why.

I myself have loved Fedora since version 7, and never cared much for Debian systems. My desktops either run Fedora or a source-built XFCE system. What distros do you use, what architectures, and why do you use them? Are there any distros you wish were still around?

You should try it again. I've installed Debian 8 with Gnome 3.14, and I'm quite satisfied with my setup. Alt-tab is pretty much instantaneous, and workspace switching as well.

Perhaps, but fluxbox is vastly superior in my usecase. I can move and drag windows around without trying to zero in on the border. I can launch applications with easily configurable shortcuts. It's very low overhead too. And I absolutely loath the "new" Gnome UI to the point where I had to uninstall `evince` and go with `qpdfview` instead.

But as you can see, the beauty of Debian is that there is no GNOME Debian or KDE Debian or whatever. You can install any desktop you like. :D
