I'm wondering what Linux distros my fellow soylentils use, and why.
I myself have loved Fedora since version 7, and never cared much for Debian systems. My desktops either run Fedora or a source-built XFCE system. What distros do you use, what architectures, and why do you use them? Are there any distros you wish were still around?

unfortunately that's about the only reason why people use windows 8, except the "fuck you" came from microsoft

Good job following the crowd that says you must hate Windows 8 to be part of the crowd.
Don't forget to run Windows 7 on your gaming rig, just to fit into the 1337 @$$h01# stereotype.

I use Windows 8.1 . It is faster than Windows 7, my gaming rig gained 2 fps, and it generally is fast to get things done once you start using Windows+S key combo plus pinning what you want to the task bar. I haven't actually seen the 'Start' menu in last several months, so I don't see how it can be annoyance to other people. It is finding fault just for the sake finding it.
I dual boot in Gentoo. I used to use Ubuntu for more than 5 years but now I have a quite fast machine (SSD+i5+8GB ram) compiling is not a time consuming process anymore and I get to fix broken stuff and install custom software in /usr/local/ as GOD intended instead of relying on ubuntu forums or hunting down package debs for dependencies. Large programs like libreoffice, firefox, thunderbird etc are available as binary packages anyway.
These days I am playing Witcher 2 which is available on Linux so I have stopped booting in Windows altogether.

Finding fault. Maybe. But, the primary complaint against Microsoft OS's from the earliest days, was that they wanted to hide the OS from the user. Some of us are comfortable interacting with the hardware, rather than interacting with Microsoft. I mean, I stayed up all night for a few nights, way back in the mists of time, working to understand MSDOS 6.22 multiconfig. I finally get that crap all figured out, and I can make the hardware bark, bed, roll over and play dead - then MS' next step is to hide the freaking OS?
When I have to use MS, I opt for WinXP 64 bit, or Win7. I've given up on WinXP mainline 32 bit version - but the 64 bit version is actually Win2003 under the hood. It's what you're left with after converting Win2003 64 bit to desktop use.
Anyway, I don't like for anything on my machine to be hidden from me. I want to get under the hood, and get grease under my fingernails. Thus, I distrust Microsoft's efforts to hide all the real working parts.

So, that extra 2 fps really made things better, did it? The total reorganization of Windows 8 is what killed it. It wouldn't have been near as bad, if they had an easily accessible option that had a familiar menu.

It did when I had a HD6670. When I bought Dell U2414, it borked on Skyrim. Now I have GTX970 and it is awesome. Now I run Skyrim with heaviest of enbs :) Anyway... if I go for GTA 5 or even witcher 2 with ultra settings I start seeing the difference.

I don't know... I got did skip Windows 8 but 8.1 had a start menu, even though not really. I found out later that it is actually better for me. See, on Linux if you want to run some program you will open terminal, type first few characters and press tab, right? In here you can just press Windows+S, type few characters - occurring anywhere in the name and you don't need to press tab - you can just type some more (which is what i do) or press up-down key to navigate. In both cases you have to press enter. Because it is quite fast, the lag of GUI vs command line tools is negligible.
I have called it fast again so let me explain. If you login to Windows 7 using remote desktop on a slow connection, you will feel the sluggishness but on same connection windows 8 will draw desktop faster and generally be more responsive. I don't know what changes they have done but they must have focused on improving speed ever since Visa fiasco.
