Population density, when done right, is a great tool to make people happier, give them more opportunities (social, economic, cultural, etc) and reduce their environmental footprint. A big part of it is that you can reduce the amount of pollution caused by transportation and housing, the two biggest resource sinks, with walkable neighborhoods and mass transit, as well as smaller dwellings (but the city becomes your living room and playground, so the actual "living area" can be much larger than for those living in some exurb in a McMansion...).
Design makes all the difference. Central Park is designed such that tens of thousands of people can be in it at once, but you never see more than a score. Nanjing Road in Shanghai is, however, Blade Runner. Or are there only two kinds, Country Mouse and City Mouse?

People has decided to depart from being a terrestrial living long time ago, humans still needs nature to live, but in every aspect of his life he tries to be a different thing than an animal. Think about it, living in the nature can be so beautiful... for one afternoon-(few days) in the middle of your holidays. People hates snakes, mosichitos, fears animals, hates to get dirty, do heavy stuff, to get flu, the too much cold as too much hot, the bacteria, the fruit that is not perfect, some times hates even his body...
This is some of the reasons that explain why we prefere to stay in cities, to why our immunity system is stucked there by using antibiotic everyday less powerful, the climate change, the ogm, the plastic surgery and maybe one day the cyborgs... We are going to be something odd and totally incompatible with the nature, cause we hate it.
