Indian scientists on Friday night launched five British satellites into orbit from the Sriharikota space port. The lift-off at 9:58 pm was successful, the space agency said.

For this special launch, Britain not only rented premium space from the Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO, but its Surrey Satellite Technology Limited also hired an entire rocket for the first time.

The 320 tonne (320,000 kilograms) rocket is as tall as a 15-storey building and will hoist, apart from a constellation of three disaster-monitoring satellites, two smaller experimental satellites into space. The total weight of the British satellites is 1440kg, making this the heaviest commercial launch ever to be undertaken by India.

I couldn't help but picturing the Indian rocket taking off with all sorts of people hanging on the outside of it, chickens in cages, bags, etc.

India is one of the most interesting and also fucked up places I have every been. They have a lot of technology and wealth juxtaposed to some of the most extreme poverty. Also they are really sensitive about the less attractive aspects of their society. In some ways they remind me of the kid who wore hand me down sneakers, brought a bag lunch to school, and got 1600's on his (old score) SATs.

They are the descendants of one of about half a dozen ancient super powers that more/less maintained its cultural/political continuity to the present day. It should be interesting, at the least.

Okay, Banaj, break-time's over. Put that headset back on and that marble back under your tongue. Glad to see that the American government views your lopsided society as a future example for their own.
