Nintendo Co., Ltd. has published a document on their Japanese webpage [document in English] stating that their most recently appointed CEO has passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth. Iwata was known for his work at HAL Laboratories in his early career, his success as CEO as denoted by the financial flourishment by Wii sales, and the fact that he was the first appointed president with no blood or marital association to the Yamauchi family that started the company in 1889.

A tragic loss for gaming. It's rare to see a CEO who is also a talented engineer and artist. He was much more than just a manager of other people. He is credited on a truly staggering number of titles [wikia.com], and his work on the Pokemon games was particularly impressive.

I never could get excited about Pokemon. I think I was too old for the appeal, though I understand them to be a solid series of JRPGs. Kirby's Adventure, Earthbound, and Metroid Fusion though, wow.

The Pokemon games weren't too bad. They probably would've been better without a leveling system. There is a lot of strategic possibilities with forming teams with 150 different choices. Leveling makes strategy less important but more accessible to those that are bad at it which also expands the age range.

Later games have competitive modes that set your Pokemon to a certain level like 50.
