The BBC are reporting that troubled community website Reddit has lost another female member of its senior team with the resignation of chief engineer Bethanye Blount, only days after the resignation of Ellen Pao. The BBC report continues:

Ms Blount told website Recode she believed Ms Pao had been put on a "glass cliff" - or set up to fail. Victoria Taylor, who oversaw a popular question-and-answer section of the site, was sacked last month.

"Victoria wasn't on a glass cliff. But it's hard for me to see it any other way than Ellen was," Bethanye Blount said in an interview.

But Ms Blount, a former Facebook employee, added that her own decision to leave Reddit just two months after joining, had not been based on gender issues. And new chief executive, Steve Huffman, said he was "confident" that the site could recruit female executives.

The phrase "glass cliff" is used to describe women placed in leadership roles during times of crisis, when positive change is hard to achieve.

[...]

Despite the ongoing turmoil, Reddit is in good financial shape, according to Mr Huffman, also one of its co-founders.

"Reddit has a lot of cash," he said, in an Ask Me Anything session on the site.. "Monetisation isn't a short-term concern of ours."

The site currently attracts 164 million monthly users.

More drama than William Shakesman. I got into computers to get away from this kind of stuff. Can we put all these people on a boat, and sink it? It's like the technology world has ceased to exist, and has been taken over by drama queens and clickbait reporters. Is there anywhere on the Internet that covers actual technology news and not all this juvenile stuff?

Now you know how gamers feel, and why they revolted against SJWs injecting ideology into games. Welcome to Gamergate.

There was none prior? I always thought most games were on a political spectrum occupied by Frank Miller of "300" fame, you know, gay fascist porn stuff, kind of like the Futurists that preceded Nazism and Fascism in Europe.

I agree that we're seeing way too much drama of the dirty laundry variety and like you, I find it distasteful. However, I do want to be informed of the societal issues surrounding technology. The site follows a policy of including such context. I don't want to visit a site that consists mostly of announcements of minor Linux releases. Having said that, if I see the name Pao one more time I will curse heartily and move on.

That is a reasonable way to look at it. There are also parallels to be drawn when we look at what is needed to manage Nexuses as we gradually introduce them. We encourage and support free speech but if a small group of individuals pose a risk to the survival of the entire site then we have to decide, as a community, on how we wish the situation to be handled. And the time to decide that is not in haste as the problem unfolds, but in advance so that everyone will know what response will be triggered by a specific action. That was one of the reasons behind NCommander's piece [soylentnews.org] a few days back. We asked the community to let us know how they see Nexuses being used, and the debate will continue over the coming weeks and months as the first community-managed nexuses are introduced.

But, of course, you don't have to read every story. Feel free to skip any stories that contain the name of 'Pao' if they appear on the front page in future.

I saw the name "William Shakeman" once in a YouTube movie review, where the guy quoted him saying "brevity is the soul of wit".

Easy solution in this case - Don't go to Reddit.

    Nothing of value is lost.
