SoylentNews is people

from the good-luck-with-that dept.

I tried to return an item to a nearby carrier-owned store, but they couldn't find my information. They never gave me a printed receipt and couldn't look it up with my phone number or name.

Now here's where it gets fishy: the clerk wanted to log into my e-mail account with the store's computer! When I told him I didn't have a web mail like GMail, etc, he asked another guy, who also said I should just log into it from there and find it.

I'm pretty sure I was giving deer-in-headlights looks while I was there. Flabbergasted is probably the word. Considering their "POS" system is based on Windows and has regular problems, this just seems tailor-made for keylogging, social engineering, or worse. I probably won't use my credit card there again.

So my question: how do I report this? Just calling customer care obviously won't cut it. I have a very hard time believing this is SOP, and that this is probably just this store--and where there's one, there are probably more.

The plot seems to be that they claim to keep no records of nothing. Or their sales record search functionality is beyond hopeless. Or their online system is down and they can do a paper-only refund if and only if they have the official paper receipt document serial number for their form.

Their dumbness is three fold, letting random people access random stuff on their corporate machines (I don't run windows at home, if someone emailed me a windows virus, its not even my fault, assuming I'm not intentionally doing stuff like that, LOL) and the other is that given the flood of crap email I keep a pretty sterile inbox, basically if it isn't a "to do" list its gone, I don't think this overly unusual so that odds are few people will keep some random email from months ago. The final aspect of dumbness if if I was trying to rip them off I'd simply have a fake email receipt saying exactly what I want.

There are other possible games that are being played that aren't being discussed. First of all the individual(s) could just be crooks of one level or another ranging from "OMG I hope op gets a hot sexting pix while I'm looking over his shoulder" all the way up to the usual small fry criminality, maybe even blackmail, who knows. Small fry criminals tend not to be terribly smart so it doesn't have to be a good idea that "we" would try. Another game that could be played is "F this guy I'm paid straight commission and if you think I'm going to help him lower my paycheck by processing a return... now what can I tell this guy thats dumb enough convince him to GTFO, but probably not dumb enough to get me fired..."
