SoylentNews is people

For those who were with us on April 1st, you may remember that I hosted an eBBQ playing Nethack. There's been some talk on doing something like this again, perhaps in the form of an ongoing Dungeons and Dragons campaign or similar. While those still remain up in the air, given our relative stability at the moment, doing another livestreaming event seems like it would be a fair bit of fun both for the staff and the community.

I'd like to make this a semi-regular feature, and invite members of the community to both join on the stream (via Skype), or even in the game itself as either allies or opponents. As such, I'm going to be hosting the second SoylentNews eBBQ this Friday, and then try to repeat every few weeks or so.

As for the choice of game, I've been feeling an urge to play Europa Universalis IV . For those unfamiliar with the series, Europa Univeralis is a set of simulation games set from the late 1400s to the early 1800s, covering the vast majority of the age of sail. As for time, I'd proposed Friday at about 5PM EST, and continuing at least until 9, if not later (the first SN eBBQ was a 24 hour event, though that was more due to insanity). I'd love to hear from the community if anyone would be interested in listening in, or actively joining. The time isn't set in stone, and I can move it if the community feels later in the evening, or perhaps during the weekend is a better idea.

As always, feedback will be welcome!

This is why I still say we need a "gamers corner" because there are sooo many games today that are just more fun when you team up with others but I'm sure many are like me and don't know anybody into the particular games I enjoy. With a gamers corner we could all post the games we are playing, see if anybody else here is also playing, and work out times to jump into each others games and have a blast.

I know there has been dozens of times I wished that I had a team mate in War Thunder that cared about PTFO instead of running up their own score, it can be frustrating when you are having a great match and end up losing because the other players are too busy piddlefarting on the far side of the map trying to get easy kills to actually complete the objective and win the match. There has been so many times if I only had a single team mate to cover my 6 while I covered theirs the match would have been a slaughter but instead the team lost on points because they were all bunched up in a single area killing AI units while the opposing team simply went from objective to objective and won the match.

I wonder if that new Nexus functionality could be used to create the games corner?

I haven't noticed the functionality but this article makes it sound like it's been deployed already [soylentnews.org]

I don't know but if it can it would be a really nice feature to have. After all gaming is bigger than Hollywood and has been for years but it can be hard to find somebody who likes the same games when there are so many out there to choose from and with many of the games allowing you to have your own events and custom battles it would be cool to start putting together a "Team Soybeans" in some of these games and having a blast. Like I said I would love to see a wall of tanks emblazoned with a giant S go rolling through the streets of Poland, preferably to the tune of Judas Priest's "Metal Gods" ;-)
