SoylentNews is people

For those who were with us on April 1st, you may remember that I hosted an eBBQ playing Nethack. There's been some talk on doing something like this again, perhaps in the form of an ongoing Dungeons and Dragons campaign or similar. While those still remain up in the air, given our relative stability at the moment, doing another livestreaming event seems like it would be a fair bit of fun both for the staff and the community.

I'd like to make this a semi-regular feature, and invite members of the community to both join on the stream (via Skype), or even in the game itself as either allies or opponents. As such, I'm going to be hosting the second SoylentNews eBBQ this Friday, and then try to repeat every few weeks or so.

As for the choice of game, I've been feeling an urge to play Europa Universalis IV . For those unfamiliar with the series, Europa Univeralis is a set of simulation games set from the late 1400s to the early 1800s, covering the vast majority of the age of sail. As for time, I'd proposed Friday at about 5PM EST, and continuing at least until 9, if not later (the first SN eBBQ was a 24 hour event, though that was more due to insanity). I'd love to hear from the community if anyone would be interested in listening in, or actively joining. The time isn't set in stone, and I can move it if the community feels later in the evening, or perhaps during the weekend is a better idea.

As always, feedback will be welcome!

I'm not a huge fan of first-person games, with some exceptions (Fallout primarily). I also dislike MMOGs. I may consider it in the future, but at least for the moment, I'll stick to the stuff in my Steam library.

Uhhh...War Thunder is third person, unless you are playing historical in which case you...well can only view the way somebody in a tank would realistically see the outside world, either through the commanders hatch or through the gunners sight. You CAN go to a gunner's sight if you need to zoom in for a long range shot but since you have shell drop and have to get your angles right its less like a FPS and more like firing an arrow or a mortar. And War Thunder is on Steam and free, that is where I got it, although I did end up spending some money on it simply because I like some of the "derpy" tanks, especially the multi turret craziness that was fielded pre war or the insane Soviet tanks where they would mount some insane gun on a bitty tank like the T-26.

So don't knock WT until you try it, if you tried to play it like an FPS you'd get dead REAL quick, you actually have to seriously think about strategy, such as angling your tank so that the enemy will be less likely to hit weak points or the shot will be more likely to bounce, you have to keep your head on a swivel and plan an exit for any place you enter, and if you are a good player (as opposed to a piddlefarter) you have to keep up with where the rest of the squad is and be ready to help them with anything from covering fire to attaching a tow rope and pulling an injured team mate out of the line of fire. It can also make for some fricking hilarious matches, like the time I killed 6 tanks...without an engine. I had angled my front really well but some shrapnel had completely destroyed my engine and rather than try to flank me and take me out the enemy kept trying to take me from the front. I ended up blocking the entire enemy squad and helping secure the win without being able to move a single inch, I thought I'd fall out my chair I was LOLing so hard.
