SoylentNews is people

Steven Pete can put his hand on a hot stove or step on a piece of glass and not feel a thing, all because of a quirk in his genes. Only a few dozen people in the world share Pete's congenital insensitivity to pain. Drug companies see riches in his rare mutation. They also have their eye on people like Timothy Dreyer, 25, who has bones so dense he could walk away from accidents that would leave others with broken limbs. About 100 people have sclerosteosis, Dreyer's condition.
...
Drugmakers are also investing in acquisitions and partnerships to get their hands on genetic information that could lead to more drugs. Amgen bought an Icelandic biotechnology company, DeCode Genetics, for $415 million in 2012, to acquire its massive database on more than half of Iceland's adult population. Genentech is collaborating with Silicon Valley startup 23andMe, which has sold its $99 DNA spit kits to 1 million consumers who want to find out more about their health and family history—more than 80 percent have agreed to have their data used for research. The Genentech partnership will study the genetic underpinnings of Parkinson's disease. And Regeneron has signed a deal with Pennsylvania's Geisinger Health System to sequence the genes of more than 100,000 volunteers.

Tough luck for the Icelanders who submitted their DNA altruistically.

Media outlets all along the spectrum of respectability employ headlines designed to draw attention. I employ cut & paste in almost every case to avoid putting words in anyone's mouth. Please direct your comments to those who wrote the headline.

There in lies the problem. By cutting and pasting the head line, you abdicate your responsibility of providing a suitable headline that is informative and accurate. Of course, the entire Internet is now click-bait, so it is hard to criticize a headline on SN that much. In fact I come to SN because it has less click-bait on the pages than other sites out there, i.e. ZH and /.

Media outlets all along the spectrum of respectability employ headlines designed to draw attention.

And their headlines, too, lie along a (subjective) spectrum of respectability. There's a balance to be struck, and personally I'd prefer Soylent to lean towards dull-but-informational more than exaggerated-for-impact.

Please direct your comments to those who wrote the headline.

I directed my comment to you as the one who submitted the unaltered headline to SoylentNews, but was not under an obligation to do so. I don't frequent Bloomberg, so it's neither here nor there to me what kind of headlines they employ.

Okay, this headline is not quite "This one weird trick" or "You won't believe," and in this case I don't suggest you have been remiss in not submitting a different headline, but...

I employ cut & paste in almost every case to avoid putting words in anyone's mouth.

...whose mouth would you be putting words into if you had submitted a different headline? It's your submission. It even starts with "Phoenix666 writes," in this case giving - in the absence of a clear distinction between submitter's opening remarks (of which there are none) and the quoted paragraphs - the impression of their words being put into your mouth.

I directed my comment to you as the one who submitted the unaltered headline to SoylentNews, but was not under an obligation to do so.

And I'm under no obligation to cushion you or anyone from headlines that others write. I submit articles to the community that I think people might enjoy or like talking about. If you're looking for a safe space to hear about news but not have your attention unduly drawn or your emotions triggered by salacious language, then Soylent might not be the place for you. Or maybe you could pony up your own submissions and help tip the balance on Soylent more toward what you'd like to see. But I'm personally not interested in processing every submission into pablum for anyone.

It even starts with "Phoenix666 writes,"

See, here again it indicates you have not helped build up anything by submitting, because if you had you'd know that's added automatically by the system; it says you prefer to tear down others (whether from insecurity, mean-spiritedness, mercenary motive, etc is left as an exercise for the reader).

You so frequently sling arrows at the contributions that others have made to the site without pitching in yourself. Honestly, it comes across as mewling.

the impression of their words being put into your mouth.

It doesn't concern me. I contribute enough with a consistent style that regular visitors can pick up pretty quickly on what is my input, and what comes from TFA. If there's doubt, they can RTFA. If they can't be bothered to RTFA, then it makes no nevermind.

If you wonkey_monkey dislike the articles floating around on the internet, and which are echoed in part or in full here for community consideration and discussion, then don't read them. If you don't have the confidence or the mettle to help this place more closely hew to whatever standard you have, then by all means find someplace that calls that forth from you. Or malinger and continue to denigrate as you have, and may you reap the mods from the seeds you have sown.
