R&D teams within HP Enterprise Services received memos this week reminding them about the company's rules regarding workplace fashion. "If you aren't dressed like the models in the posters that HP displays around its locations, then your appearance is sapping the productivity of the workers around you," was one summary of the memo by an anonymous source. Many employees have become comfortable wearing t-shirts and shorts on a regular basis, and it is believed that "scruffy-looking" engineers might alienate visiting customers.

Dressing the way you want on the job is a privilege, not a right.

To me, it is one of the handful of company culture points I consider when looking for a new job. If it changes significantly after I'm hired, I'll consider leaving since companies that tighten dress codes are often about to put up other rules and take away perks. The exception might be startups, where I expect a general addition of rules to go with the growth.

One of the mid-market suburban software companies I interviewed at had a lovely, bright entry area and lunch room, and then opened to a soul-sucking low-walled open cube farm. I'm happy I didn't get that job. Who wants to see and hear everything that another ~60 people are up to when you're trying to focus? No doubt the big cheeses have conference rooms permanently reserved while the peons put in ear buds and request dual screens. I don't need an office with a door, but cube walls should be at least five-to-six feet high between groups.

As for HP ES, when you need to host a big visitor, send out a memo for dressing better for a day. It's not that bloody hard.
