The Washington Post reports that an internet escort in Charleston, W.Va., may have saved her own life and the lives of many other women, when she shot and killed an alleged attacker who showed up at the woman's home on July 18 after answering an escort ad she had placed on Backpage.com. Neal Falls showed up with multiple pairs of handcuffs and a Subaru full of weapons and tools, including a shovel, knives, a bulletproof vest, a machete, bleach, trash bags, sledgehammers and axes. In Falls's pocket, police said, was a list of names of potential future victims, all of whom are sex workers who advertised on Backpage. Investigators are trying to determine whether Falls is responsible for a string of slayings targeting sex workers in Ohio and Nevada. "We are entering his DNA profile into CODIS, which is a national crime DNA database, to see if it matches any previous submissions from anywhere in the United States," says Steve Cooper, the Charleston Police Department's chief of detectives. "If his DNA has been located in any other crimes and his profile was entered into CODIS, there will be a match."

From the moment Falls showed up at the home of his latest alleged victim, he turned violent. "I knew he was there to kill me," says the victim who asked not to be identified. Falls pulled a gun on her and began strangling her. "When he strangled me he just wouldn't let me get any air. I grabbed my rake and when he laid the gun down to get the rake out of my hands, I shot him. I just grabbed the gun and shot behind me." Local authorities are treating the shooting as an act of self-defense. According to Cooper, "when we find multiple sets of handcuffs, a machete, an axe, a bulletproof vest and container of bleach, the first thing that comes to an investigator's mind is, 'This is a serial killer kit.'"

    Not a troll: serious question.

I've been thinking about finding a prostitute. I want a no-strings, clean and safe, anonymous, vanilla sexual encounter with a woman between 30 and 40. I'm a clean, upright citizen with a relationship that isn't satisfying me, and I want a night or a couple of hours to clear the GF out of my head and gain some perspective.

Is Backpage safe, or will I get HIV/busted/scammed/beaten and left for dead/killed? Will I be supporting pimps and a sex industry that uses and harms women, or will I enjoy the company of an independent woman who is selling her services of her own free will? Is Backpage what I should be using in this day and age?

There are places on the net that actually have ratings systems and 'reviews,' etc. They are kinda weird to read, big echo chamber with more than the average amount of misogyny but also some really strange naivete too. Some of them even have forums where the escorts and clients both post in a sort of community and low-key self-promotional way. I was curious about the subculture for a while about a decade ago but then got bored reading those websites and can't remember any site names off the top of my head any more. But I'm sure that if you google for things like "escort reviews" you can find them pretty quick. If I were to actually hire someone I'd spend a few weeks just reading the review sites and forums, learn the lingo (DATY, girlfriend-experience, roses, incall, outcall, LE, civilian, etc) and get a feel for what's normal and what's a warning sign.

Also, (back then at least, pre-facebook) it seemed like the cops busted people in two ways - (1) fake escorts where they lure the client to a hotel room and arrest them once they say the wrong thing or pay actual money and (2) fake clients where they lure the escort to a hotel room/apartment/house and arrest them after they say the wrong thing or take possession of the money. So if the escort comes to you, you are probably safe from being arrested. But it is a bigger risk for the escort so it usually costs more. Also you would probably want to use a hotel room because you don't want the escort knowing where you live. You'd want a hotel that is escort friendly - most are because what do they care?, but some are busybodies and will call the cops if they are suspicious. Some clients seem to become regulars and develop a level of mutual trust with an escort, but that first time who knows who is a nutjob.

Also, stay away from the drug addicts - they do risky things to feed their addiction so higher rates of STDs (condoms do not prevent herpes, look it up) and they are unpredictable in general. Might rob you, etc.

I almost think you're joking. My spam box is full of crap from women wanting to meet up. I don't recognize Backpage from the spam, but I'm sure it's probably in there.

Dude - the prostitutes are looking for you. I have NO IDEA how "safe" any particular site might be - if you're paranoid, don't click any of those links. Personally, I can't be bothered with them.

Check your own spam box. You may be surprised at what you find.

You know those aren't real escorts right?
At best they are cam whores. Most likely they are just scams.

I expect I will soon. Once I do I plan to employ several of Portland's Ladies of the Evening.

It's not always easy to tell when a pimp is involved. One way is to have a look at where she actually lives. That's not always possible but if shevwears expensive clothes yet lives in desperate poverty quite likely she has a pimp.

Wear a condom. Follow the instructions.

Some of the ads say "Independent", however I expect some make that claim who really aren't.

Bring her flowers, spend some time getting to know her first, tip her generously and give her a warm hug when you part.
