Windows 10 gains a personal assistant in Cortana. What originally launched on Windows Phone has been brought to the PC, and it can now work across all of your Windows devices. One of the key benefits of Windows 10 over Windows 8 is that features like Cortana are easily discoverable. Cortana now lives in a search box right beside the start button, and it can keep track of your travel plans, set up reminders, and perform searches for you. Microsoft is also adding a new browser to Windows 10, with Microsoft Edge. Although based on Internet Explorer under the hood, huge chunks of code have been taken out to improve security, and the rendering and scripting engines have been optimized to make Edge one of the fastest browsers around. It adds support for new features like being able to markup web pages and share them, and Cortana is built in to provide contextual search results right in the page. It is a big step up from Internet Explorer in standards compliance, and while it’s not quite finished yet, Microsoft has promised to update it often through the Windows Store.

...

The built in Xbox app will support Game DVR, allowing you to record game sessions, edit them, and share them, all within the Xbox app. One of the coolest features coming is game streaming from an Xbox One to any Windows 10 PC, allowing you to use any PC or tablet as the display for the Xbox, as long as it is on the LAN.

Is anyone up to speed on how Windows Pro upgrades will now work? I've mainly ignored windows 10 thinking I'll look at it when it's out, but looking through documents yesterday it appears 10 Will now be on the auto-upgrade bandwagon. There is also the Branch for Business and Long Term Service branch, but it's not clear if that now requires Software Assurance or not. Honestly it sounds a lot like mafia "protection" services where Microsoft comes along and says "It would be a shame if someone would come and UPGRADE your computers.."

Consumer side I think this upgrade cycle will only serve to push people away from windows faster. People buy a PC and expect it to function the same until they upgrade it themselves (which they never do) or buy a new one. Folks wont be happy having Microsoft moving shit around for no reason and breaking functionality they preferred "just because".

I wonder how it works with perhaps not 100% legit installs. You know, like in China where basically all installed machines are pirated, or I've heard that locals who use it solely as a steam boot loader might not exactly have all their paperwork in order. Then they "steal" all your private information... whats stopping them from hostage situations...

I could see some kind of popup like "Your paperwork doesn't seem entirely in order... pay yer OS licensing fee or the steam install gets concrete galoshes but don't worry we would tweet your steam account password for you, you know, so you don't forget it meanwhiles, he he he"

My win7 pro was correctly upgraded to 10 pro. I had to use the media creation tool http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=616936 [microsoft.com] my ssd was to full for the automatic updates. After preparing a USB drive and running setup from there it went smoothly. Surprisingly I was not asked to create a MS account and was left with more frees space after the installation.
Sadly, I had to run Windows update to fetch the Nvidia driver to have accelerated graphics.

It seems faster than seven but then again the cpu fan seems to run faster too. According to the cpu core temperature, the performance gain seems to come from a better multicore utilization. I did not started a game yet to but I assume that the performance will be quite similar to win7 until Nvidia release a dx12 driver for the older gpu.
