A gang armed with machetes has hacked a secular blogger to death at his home in Dhaka in the fourth such murder in Bangladesh since the start of the year, an activist group and police have said.

Niloy Chatterjee, who used the pen-name Niloy Neel, was murdered on Friday after the men broke into his flat in the capital's Goran neighbourhood, according to the Bangladesh Blogger and Activist Network, which was alerted to the attack by a witness.

"They entered his room in the fifth floor and shoved his friend aside and then hacked him to death. He was a listed target of the Islamist militants," the network's head Imran H Sarker, told the AFP news agency.

Chatterjee, 40, was a critic of religious extremism that led to bombings in mosques and the killing of numerous civilians, Sarker said.

You are on a bus that seems to be full with very hard people who do not seem to know each other.
Suddenly, a reporter stands up and says: I can prove, that everyone on this bus, except me, that guy (you), and that mother (dunno who), is a murderer and rapist.
    Now, was this wise?
Evidently, some "reporters" and bloggers just do not seem to understand how to talk about stuff that everyone knows, but can not do anything about.

Building a resistance against a strong group is difficult, especially if there is a need to gather people who might end up fighting for real...
The backside of this new "freedom of speech" is that there are to many idiots pointing out and talking about difficult things, and fucking up the mood.
Thus the hard and cunning people who could initiate a slow change do not even get a chance...
Then again, who am I to talk...

Apparently he could not (or did not) separate his real identity from his pen name. Bloggers always seem to want to bask in the perceived glory when their blog attracts a following. A foolish and dangerous practice when you have pissed off just about everyone at one time or another.

I better not ever see you bitch about anyone writing something anonymously again.

He literally put his life on the line for his beliefs and for his community. Shame on you for calling him a glory-hound.

Unlike someone whose real name is not 'frojack' this guy was brave enough to stand behind his words. It might be dangerous, but it is that kind of bravery which is necessary to create social change. Anonymity has its place, but ultimately the standard bearers for progress have to come out of the closet if progress is to be made.
