Motorists will be able to recharge their cars as they drive if a scheme being proposed by Highways England comes to fruition.
The government agency has announced plans to test wireless power-transfer tech that it hopes to build under the country's motorways and major A roads.
It has already completed a feasibility study and is now asking companies to tender bids to host off-road trials.

It aims to run the experiments for about 18 months before deciding whether to commit itself to an on-road trial."The potential to recharge low emission vehicles on the move offers exciting possibilities," commented Transport Minister Andrew Jones.

If you can get enough power by induction to charge the batteries, what do you need the batteries for? Hell just build mag-lev roads and do away with all the crap that comes from tyres, brakes and wheels.

That's right, you can't crack the pavement with you bare hands.
But... wouldn't a hammer be cheaper for the purpose than the batteries?

A reach too far.
You aren't going to be able to afford a mag lev everywhere.
But you already have the roads. If you can add induction cheaply (which I doubt) then you could get by with a much smaller battery in the electric car. Just enough to get from the powered road to your parking space at your home, or your work place.
I'm always astounded when people read one little experimental plan on the web, and want to magically rebuild all of civilization.
No, you are mistaken. I've always had this sig.

It's all because of all the time I spent as a youth reading such stuff as Popular Science and Popular Mechanics plus all the science fiction I could get. I can't help it. Still waiting for my flying car.
