The U.S. Commerce Department on Monday delayed for at least a year its plans to give up oversight of a key component of Internet governance.

The department said it would renew its contract with the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers for one year. ICANN administers the Internet's domain-name system, through contracts with the companies that sell website names and addresses. Commerce has overseen ICANN since the organization was created in 1998. Last year, the Obama administration said it planned to transfer ICANN oversight to an unspecified group of international stakeholders by September 2015.

Critics of the plan have expressed concerns that it may open the door to influence by foreign governments that aren't committed to Western principles of free expression, and may want to impose different rules for administering the Internet in different parts of the world.

we designed it, we popularized it, its a mirror of our culture. it USED to be very free and open (partially still is, but getting worse each passing year).

if the repressive countries want their own rules, fine, have them build a parallel and separate internet. have fun, guys!

perhaps what we need is a big 'switch' that we can dial in and set which 'highway' (sorry!) we connect to. let there be several and let each ideology own their own. you want a christian-only view? fine- connect to that internet. the owners of that can decide how it runs. as long as its not the only pathway we can take, let them have their goofy ideas. same with culture X and Y and Z. you want to stay in your echo chamber? fine. leave your switch on its current position.

that really is the best way to go forward. no one 'owns' the whole set of highways and each person can decide which style they prefer to 'drive' on.

best of all: it keeps the bad guys on their own roads and stops them, cold, from trying to control everyone else's!

Yeah man... Echo chambers for everyone. No one should be exposed to any opinion they don't like...

As opposed to people trying to get anything e.g. not respectful of Islam taken off the Internet as a whole.
