An Ars update:

Update (Aug. 18): Microsoft has announced through Major Nelson's blog that the previously hidden "very high quality" 1080p streaming feature will officially launch through an Xbox app update rolling out today. Our own tests found the new setting greatly improves the streaming experience, provided you have an in-home Internet setup that can handle it. The app update also includes some interface improvements that make it easier to interact with friends and add outside games to the app.

Previously:

Reddit user OomaThurman has publicized the method for unlocking this hidden quality setting, which involves editing the "userconsoledata" file in your Xbox app folder.

Yes, and Intel does the same thing with their i3-i5-i7 processors... shipping the same hardware and using software to disable features of the cheaper lines. (At least that's my recollection back when the fury of them introducing the idea was brought up.) AMD does it too, based on what I've heard about it being possible to "upgrade" binned processors.

I'm torn about this. On the one hand market segmentation does lead more tailored products for each person (notionally better for both the producer and the consumer). Also I'm sure you'll agree that the majority of the cost of the product is in R&D (and marketing) rather than manufacturing, so it is reasonable for them to find some way to monetize that additional R&D effort on the better product.

On the other hand, they are actively spending money to deliver an inferior thing.
