Flibanserin or Addyi, a female libido-enhancing drug created by Sprout Pharmaceuticals, has been approved by a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee:

It was rejected by the FDA twice for lack of effectiveness and side effects like nausea, dizziness and fainting. Women taking the drug reported between half and one more sexually satisfying event per month - results experts admitted were "modest". Originally the drug was produced by German company Boehringer Ingelheim. Sprout bought the drug from that company after it was turned down by the FDA.

Documents from the 4 June FDA advisory meeting describe the drug's purpose of "treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women". Women would take it each night. A doctor would have to determine whether a woman seeking the pill was suffering from a disorder characterised by a lack of sexual fantasies and desire, causing the woman distress. Currently, there is nothing on the US market approved for treatment of HSDD or another condition, female sexual interest/arousal disorder (FSIAD). "This condition is clearly an area of unmet medical need," the FDA documents said.

Reuters adds that the FDA will require a warning over "potentially dangerous low blood pressure and fainting when taken with alcohol."

FDA press release.

Seriously, these are pretty crap benefits, and if you look at the potential side effects, which range from nausea to fainting, you've got to ask, 'what is the point, other than marketing?'

Meanwhile, tons of important diseases ravaging the developing world go untreated as researchers struggle to find funding. But making rich, white women horny, that gets the money flowing!

Not everyone experiences the side effects and there will be variety in the magnitude of positive outcomes as well.

Do you expect the rich white women or the for-profit pharmaceutical company to help the developing world?

The rich white women are doing as much as the poor black men, or anyone else for that matter, in helping the developing world.

I bet you're one of those middle-class suburban 20-somethings who feels guilty for having a middle-class suburban upbringing (not guilty enough to give up any creature comforts, just guilty enough to bitch about it, like the "serious" artists who live the Bohemian lifestyle).

Wow, AC got +1 insightful for being a douche. Well, you're wrong. I've spent most of the past 20 years living in some of the poorest countries on earth working in one way or another on projects that help the poorest of the poor. Got a masters degree in economic development. I've been responsible for over $1.3 billion dollars of project money spent in underdeveloped nations. Spent the last 10 years in Africa. In fact, I'm still there. Don't believe me? Check out my website, www.therandymon.com, dickhead. I'm responsible for helping revamping the Beninese justice system, building mini-hydro projects in Mozambique, and over $170M of investments in rice agriculture for the Senegalese Sahel. I've worked hand to hand with people living on a dollar a day.

When I complain that we're not doing enough to reduce poverty, it's because I've been experiencing it first hand for the majority of my working career. If you can top that, I'd like to hear what you've got. Otherwise, go choke on a bag of dicks. I'm the real deal. You're an anonymous coward, and a presumptious one, at that.

Did people make that money available to you willingly? Because if it was tax money you should understand that it was taken by force, making you among the elite top thieves in the world. In such a case, the best I can hope for you is that you renounce your evil ways before doing further harm, because that sum is far larger than you could hope to repay over the remainder of your life.
