When others get off the train to finally go home, Leonie Müller stays behind. That's because she already is home: The train is her apartment, and she says she likes it that way.

The German college student gave up her apartment in spring. "It all started with a dispute I had with my landlord," Müller told The Washington Post via e-mail. "I instantly decided I didn't want to live there anymore — and then I realized: Actually, I didn't want to live anywhere anymore."

Instead, she bought a subscription that allows her to board every train in the country for free. Now, Müller washes her hair in the train bathroom and writes her college papers while traveling at a speed of up to 190 mph. She says that she enjoys the liberty she has experienced since she gave up her apartment. "I really feel at home on trains, and can visit so many more friends and cities. It's like being on vacation all the time," Müller said.

Agatha Christie wrote a lot of her stories while travelling. DH Lawrence and Hemingway also. Would your work, creativity, and lifestyle mesh well with a life of permanent travel, like the girl from the article?

There is word for this: Homeless. It isn't new. The homeless camp out in pretty much every public place that doesn't take active measures to eliminate them, So she stinks up the trains, wrecks their restrooms trying to bathe in them and we are supposed to praise her because.... oh, I missed that part. There isn't a reason to.

And homeless is just the politically correct euphemism we now are expected to use instead of the perfectly good phrase we all used to use for these sort of people: bum.

The homeless or transient are utterly beneath contempt and deserving of no respect, protection of the law or even acknowledgement of their humanity. They are the scum of the Earth and should all be shipped to concentration camps to be conveniently disposed of so that I don't have to look at them or smell them.

And what about those who have lost their homes through no fault of their own?

It Is one thing to choose to be homeless like this woman. It is quite another to lose your home because because of a fire, flood or death of the sole provider.

The woman in the article is not begging and pays her way. She just doesn't have a permanent address.

Hells, she isn't even sleeping on the trains. She is just hanging out on them, though I do wonder why she doesn't wash her hair at her boyfriend's when she is there for the night.

It is quite another to lose your home because because of a fire, flood or death of the sole provider.

Conservatives would claim that such situations are what homeowner's insurance, flood insurance, and life insurance are for, respectively. In a free market, you can choose from "like a good neighbor", "you're in good hands", "on your side", "15 minutes can save you 15 percent", and other private sector home and life insurers operating in your market. However, the free market occasionally fails to provide appropriate insurance products, causing government to step in and establish the National Flood Insurance Program [wikipedia.org].

Some folks here have apparently never heard of the concept of being facetious to make a point, don't have the sarcasm detection gene, are very poor in reading comprehension, or are just too impatient to read the last two lines of my post.

wrecks their restrooms trying to bathe in them

That part surprises me the most. She's blowing 400 euro a month on a train, you'd think she could toss down 50 euro or whatever for a nationwide gym franchise membership. Maybe they don't have those in Europe. At least in the US not only do they tend to have awesome bathroom facilities and lockers for monthly rent, but they also had towel service and, obviously, you can exercise at a gym.

I know there's cockroach filled moldy smelly gyms in a bad part of town at the $5/month level, but there are really nice ones out there.

I mean I understand why a homeless unemployed alcoholic doesn't drop $250/month to join the fanciest "athletic club" (really more of a country club) in town, or even $5 to join the roach infested hellhole, but she's got train money so its a rounding error.
