We need to do some maintenance operations on both the webserver and database servers. We expect that we're going to have to offline mysql for awhile, and as such the site will be down while the database is. We expect the work to be approximately 15-20 minutes, but scheduling a full hour in case something goes wrong.

During this period, IRC, as well the wiki will remain up as they're on separate boxes, so you can reach us there. We'll post news to the wiki if for whatever reason we remain down for more than an hour.

Sorry about any inconvenience

What's this "Slash" I see next to the story? Is that the guy from Guns 'N' Roses?

What's this "Slash" I see next to the story?

It's slang for urinate, as in "I need to take a slash."
Seems appropriate, as the site needs to "go down for maintenance" :-)

If "slash" is "urination," I'd hate to think what "beta" is.

Also, downtime during prime trolling hour? But how will I earn -1, Troll with IRC posts? Bah.

I misclicked on the topic index. Corrected.

That being said, if we do something about slashcode itself, slash is probably the right topic which is why we didn't delete it.

Saying "I" while posting as AC, without indicating who YOU ARE, is pretty useless.

A maintenance window shouldn't be considered an "inconvenience" or need an apology when advance communication is made. I once worked in a shop that only allowed maintenance to be performed on 12/25 or 12/30. I now work at a shop that understands the importance of scheduled downtime with proper warning.

Agreed. I might also suggest that a topic of this nature might benefit from being "stickied" at the top of the front page until the downtime occurs so that people loading up close to the appointed time aren't caught off guard before they scroll down far enough.
