The New Hampshire Supreme Court recently struck down a law that restricts potentially offensive vanity license plates. According to Seacoast Online:
In a unanimous decision, the state Supreme Court agreed with the arguments of David Montenegro, who wanted the vanity plate reading "COPSLIE" to protest what he calls government corruption.
State law prohibits vanity plates that "a reasonable person would find offensive to good taste." But the New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union argued that the law is unconstitutionally vague and gives too much discretion to a person behind a Department of Motor Vehicles counter.

I have to say this is one of the reasons I have pretty much abandoned Slash for here, if an admin would have made a mistake like that on Slash the grammar nazis would have turned the entire thread into nothing but a giant pedantic grammar black hole, here somebody just makes a funny and moves on.
As for TFA? I don't see why vanity plates should be a big deal at all honestly. Oh I know WHY the states have 'em, its so they can charge more money every year so some vain douchebag can have "big rod" or some such on his Z28 but from a purely logical standpoint they really make no sense. I mean how many times have you actually noticed anybody's license plate without them specifically pointing it out? I have passed the same 7 vehicles leaving my apt every single day since 2007, do any of them have vanity plates? Hell if I know, all I can tell you is there are 3 Rangers, a Mazda, a couple Chevys and a black GMC, their plates could spell out "old Hairyfeet sucks like WinME" for all I'd know. Unless you put neon lights or some other "look at me! LOOK AT ME!!" to draw folks attention to the plate I bet 99.95% of the people out there will never know you even have a vanity plate, much less whether it says something naughty.
ACs are never seen so don't bother. Always ready to show SJWs for the racists they are.

I think a lot of it is we're much more willing to edit the articles; I can count the number of times on one hand I saw articles editing at the other site.
As for vanity plates, I've never owned one per say (and I'm not sure if I'll get one when I buy a truck), but when I lived in Oregon, I dropped the $20 dollars (one-time fee) for the Crater Lake [oregon.gov] plates, since I consider the stock tree to be kinda ugly (YMMV); I have to say the $20 dollars I spent gave me a LOT of satisfaction for money paid; I was quite sad when they got replaced with stock Florida ones when I leased my car to a friend.
(and yeah, I doubletook when I saw this article; I'm on VAC from yesterday to Sat, so I didn't even see this on the hopper. Just enjoying the view and life from the Empire Builder, crossing the United States by rail).

I read license plates, custom or not. But I'm a compulsive reader of anything in sight. Cereal boxes. Toilet paper labels. Hairy's posts. ;)
And they're frequently amusing... my local fave is a sports car with "NOWHERE" on the plate, which could reference the middle of nowhere (Montana) or going nowhere fast.
My fave in Los Angeles was one I managed to be behind during rush hour several times (not even at the same time of day, but always in the same area) -- and it was a chance plate, as I knew cuz I'd seen others in the sequence, and they don't issue vanities that could confuse the existing sequences. It read: "2SPY007"
And one day I saw actor Thom Bray on the freeway. You might remember him as the geek in RIPTIDE, which aired immediately after THE A-TEAM. What did his plate read? "B-TEAM"

Seriously, I found your journal post amusing and truthful. We have Mexican neighbors who work hard and limit their households to single 'American'-size families and nice cars. In fact, comparing our properties, I'd say we're the Mexicans of the neighborhood and we're just about the only white people left.
On the other hand, being in a farming area, we have a shitton of Mexicans everywhere who do things like swap license plates; their kids are the ones who comprise the local gangs (whose graffiti is mostly lazy scribbles) and get shot in the back when they run away from robbing a local shoe store.

I can't help but think that "Cops Lie" on your license plate is just asking to get pulled over on a regular basis.
Just like how an excess or certain bumper stickers can get your car vandalized (as can license plates proclaiming your favorite sports team), telling off the cops as you're driving around town is just your little way of being sure to rack up plenty of "improper lane usage" and "too fast for condition" tickets, and whatever 'judgement calls' he can get.
Let's hope that he has lots of free time, and a jurisdiction that records everything.

When I first came to the US I got conned by a curbsider into spending $2.5k for a car that must have been worth closer to $1k. The thing was crap but I kinda liked it. So I bought it "CRAP CAR". I was very surprised to be allowed to have the plate. It was lot of fun, people would always be photographing the car from behind at stop lights. It really made having a rubbish car well worthwhile.

I suggest "NONE" - so that anytime someone tries to record your license plate it will look like your car had no plates.

Years ago, someone in the part of the upstate NY that I lived in has "MWMWMWMW" as their vanity plate (on a white BMW or other relatively high-end car, IIRC). This was before the days of automated plate readers being common, so I'm guessing that they just did it so that cops would have a hard time getting it correct on tickets...in which case it probably would have been better to randomize the order rather than just alternate Ms and Ws.
