In case you haven't been following all the collections at archive.org, here's an article that showcases some amazing science fiction episodes from the early 1950's Dimension X radio show. Fifty half hour shows are available at the archive.org site which should be a good TV replacement for a week or two.

From the site:

Dimension X made its mark by adapting short stories by acknowledged masters of the craft: Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, and even a non-genre-bound literary mind like Kurt Vonnegut. All of these world-creators knew well the value of imagination, and radio, in its way, stood then and remains today the most evocative, imagination-driven medium of them all.

Some of these are really wonderful - thank you for posting this source!

My old man had some of these on reel-to-reel, which i listened to as a kid; several of these have plots that are damn close to later TV scripts. As one example, i recall that "Mars is Heaven" (Dimension_X_1951-01-07__33_MarsIsHeaven.mp3) has many of the plot points of star-trek/orig-series "The Cage" (later "The Menagerie"). Also some of the Outer Limits plots sync right up. I think all the old TV scifi series producers must have listened to "Dimension X".

About 10 years ago I subscribed to live365, and ended up mostly listening to those old-time radio shows. I especially liked the Science Fiction ones.

Did some of them get replayed? Or is their legitimately two "No Contacts", two "Mars is Heaven", etc? I suppose I'll have to download and find out. The file sizes suggest they are different... though I suspect they must be the same.

Sounds like it should be rather enjoyable to listen to during commutes. Thanks for sharing!

Wikipedia has a list of episodes [wikipedia.org], but no commentary to explain.

For these older shows, though, there were usually two reason for repeats:

      1. Performed live twice in one evening, once for the east coast, once (a few hours later) for the west coast.
      2. Script or other logistical problems would leave them with no choice but to reprise a previous show.

They are dismantling the sleeping middle class. More and more people are becoming poor. We are their cattle. We are being bred for slavery.

"The Roads Must Roll", "Nightfall" and "Pebble in the Sky" are stories I remember reading in anthology books. It is a pleasure to hear them too.

Not SciFi, but this seems like a good time to offer a recommendation to old time radio listeners for The Six Shooter [archive.org], starring James Stewart.

I would also call everyone's attention to the "X Minus One" radio series which was a more successful reboot of "Dimension X". The producers were the same, some of the same stories were dramatized (e.g., No Contact, Mars is Heaven), and some of the shows were direct rebroadcasts (e.g., There Will Come Soft Rains, Zero Hour). Those are also available at archive.org. Enjoy! I do regularly. [archive.org]

I'd like to listen to these in my car (burnt to CD) - is there anyway to do this? I've looked at the HTML source, and ripping the mp3s direct doesn't seem trivial.

I just listened to a commercial for Wheaties, it starred some popular baseball player of the time saying how he has eaten Wheaties for the last 20 years. It was weird.
