Ars Technica reports on Google's continued involvement with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the notorious corporate lobbying group.

Common Cause and more than 50 other advocacy groups this week called on Google to end its affiliation with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a group that has pushed state laws limiting the rights of cities and towns to create community-owned broadband networks. ALEC also opposes network neutrality rules that Google used to be a staunch supporter of and last month urged the FCC to quickly approve Comcast’s purchase of Time Warner Cable without imposing any regulatory conditions on the merger.

[...] When contacted by Ars, a Google spokesperson replied, “we aren't going to be commenting on this letter.”

It's worth noting that even Microsoft has withdrawn its support of the group. Has hell frozen over?

I keep telling people that Google is worse than Microsoft nowadays, but people just keep hating on Mr. Bill and ignoring the clown-colored Borg cubes surrounding them.

Google are as entrenched now as any Comcast or Microsoft or Monsanto. They don't need to worry about public opinion, as people will use their services regardless.

'Don't be evil' was a gimmick at a time when Microsoft were at the height of their cackling moustache twirling malevolence. It was never meant to be an ethic.

I use Ask [ask.com]. It is optimized for soccer moms [webmasterworld.com], so it is particularly good for pop culture, arts and crafts, health and those embarrassing gaps in general knowledge.

If you switch search engine, there is always the FUD [Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt] that you'll miss one vital result. This is amplified if the order of results differs due to differing search engine demographics. However, you should persevere.

(As an example of search engine demographics, Google ran popular searches on Yahoo and concluded that their competitor was inferior. However, Yahoo ran popular searches on Google and came to the same conclusion. This is correct because the aggregate requirements of each search engine differs.)
