Allison Griswold reports at Slate that Pizza Hut wants to help you order your food subconsciously with a new product that is being tested at 300 locations across the UK that uses eye-tracking technology to allow diners to order within seconds using only their eyes. The digital menu shows diners a canvas of 20 toppings and builds their pizza based on which toppings they look at longest. To try again, a diner can glance at a "restart" button. "Finally the indecisive orderer and the prolonged menu peruser can cut time and always get it right," a Pizza Hut spokesperson said in a statement, "so that the focus of dining can be on the most important part - the enjoyment of eating!" According to news release from Tobii Technology, the Subconscious Menu can determine which ingredients your mind and eyes have been looking at longest in exactly 2.5 seconds. The menu then uses a powerful mathematical algorithm to identify, from 4896 possible ingredient combinations, the customer’s perfect pizza. "Tests on the Subconscious Menu have been incredibly positive with 98% of people, recommended a pizza with ingredients they love."

“After a fairly shaky start to the day, Arthur's mind was beginning to reassemble itself from the shell-shocked fragments the previous day had left him with.
He had found a Nutri-Matic machine which had provided him with a plastic cup filled with a liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea.
The way it functioned was very interesting. When the Drink button was pressed it made an instant but highly detailed examination of the subject's taste buds, a spectroscopic analysis of the subject's metabolism and then sent tiny experimental signals down the neural pathways to the taste centers of the subject's brain to see what was likely to go down well. However, no one knew quite why it did this because it invariably delivered a cupful of liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea.”

The indecisive orderer will get the pizza with the undefinable topping which he looked at longest because he tried to find out what it was. The taste of it teaches him to decide faster next time. ;-)

Banana and peanut butter do go well together, but probably not on a pizza. To make a banana pizza you pre-bake a thin crust to get it crisp, brush on honey as the adhesive layer, banana slices in the honey, and maybe a bit of cinnamon dusted on top. Then the whole thing goes back in the oven until it's hot. You could try using peanut butter instead of honey, but I think it would be hard to get a good balance there unless you were making your own specifically for this purpose. Now, a chocolate banana pizza on the other hand...

In London at least I've been to at least one pizza place (run by ozzies I believe) that, amongst other things, made a bacon (proper back bacon which I'm not sure you get in the Americas) and banana pizza. It looked like something that had been shat out of a dyspeptic street-sweeping machine and tasted like a choir of angels were having an orgy in your mouth.

I've seen this app. The problem is it's all good. Its like taking a college student to a liquor store and being surprised they love everything they see.

Now try a little harder, with weird ingredients like chocolate covered grasshoppers, dragonfruit, pork rinds, and raw eel. That would at least be challenging.

I hope the resolution in real life is better than the pixs I've seen online, because it took me awhile to figure out the "raisins" are actually chopped black olives. Or maybe you UK people are weirder than I thought.

I've had the Curacao Supreme [pizzahut.cw] pizza: tuna, ham, mushrooms, raisins, green peppers, black olives, garlic, and gouda cheese. It has both raisins and black olives! Certainly one of the most unusual pizzas I've had, and definitely the most unusual I've had at a Pizza Hut.

I've also had their Caribbean Celebration: grilled chicken, ham, onions, green pepper, corn, pineapple, pimento, special bbq sauce, gouda cheese, and mozzarella.

Do not bother with their specialty crap. It is all mostly frozen and has lowish turnover.

Get a hand tossed peperoni well done. It will be exactly like you remember. Because that is the original style that they used to sell. Even then it is still hit or miss. About 80% of the time it is done correctly.

They recently cut down the time to cook (so they can make more pizzas). Basically makes the pizza slimy.

Dominos keeps screwing with the sauce. One month it will have too much sugar. The next too much of some spice. Think they have changed it about 10 times in the past 10 years.

Where I live there are 3 other places you can get ny style. But it ends up being rather meh... There is one place that makes a seriously good sicilian style but they will only make 2 per day and 99% of the time someone else has bought it. So I am stuck with the hut and have to hack their pizzas to make them good.

I was going to say - the biggest problem with the app is that no matter what you look at, you still end up with a Pizza Hut pizza. Maybe if they offered a "less grease" icon I could stare at the whole time...
