The Telegraph reports
As more cities in America legalise the drug, attention has switched to the pungent smell that wafts from the joint itself.
Denver has passed a new “odour ordinance” with a potential $2,000 (£1,247) fine for anyone found guilty of polluting the atmosphere.
The need to draw up standards emerged because of the confusion over the legal position of whether somebody smoking marijuana in their own home could be committing an environmental offence when the smell seeps into the street.

Not to mention regular cigarettes and especially cigars - far more foul smelling and dangerous that weed smoke.
How about alcohol fumes? Not so dangerous, but often pretty nasty. Or scented candles - those things should mostly be banned outright. To say nothing of paints, urethanes, and other construction and household chemicals - a lot of those things do damage to bring truth to those laughable old "this is your brain on drugs" ads.
I can understand not wanting to be involuntarily subjected to a mind-altering drug just because your neighbor likes to smoke, but has it really gotten so bad that folks really need to worry about that? Or is this just busybodies who want the world to cater to them, even as they flood the neighborhood with toxic fumes from their oil-burning lawnmower?

While I'm not a fan of the smell from scented candles, unfortunately I learned the hard way that the smoke & residue from both cigarettes and marijuana triggers a nasty allergy. MJ triggers pseudo-migraines roughly in proportion to the exposure, so all I have to do is avoid doing stupid things like attending Dead concerts indoors... If unknowingly sit next to someone that had a single cigarette outside several hours earlier and washed their hands, in contrast, it's enough to trigger an asthma attack.
I'm lucky enough to have spent my life in California, where smoking was banned in all restaurants, stores, public buildings, etc. when I was about 13, and even before that there weren't many smokers here. I'm guessing that once we finally get around to legalizing marijuana, it will probably be handled exactly the same way (do it all you want, as long as others aren't affected), and most people will probably favor eating the stuff in brownies or whatever instead.

Granite City and Roxana, IL both have rather foul odors thanks to the industry present. I am fairly certain those run the risk of causing more environmental harm than some stoners who happen to have their windows open.
I don't care for the smell (or taste) of pot smoke, but those smells are infinitely more foul.

Seriously, the scent of pot? How about banning every chevy made before 1995 -- the exhaust from those reeks of unburned gas which is not only annoying, it's bad for the environment. And what the hell is it with Dodge card and mini-vans -- after a few years they blow blue oil smoke all over. Getting all worked up about the scent of pot (or cigarettes or cigars) in the outside air, is like driving 40 miles in your SUV to save 15 cents on a gallon of milk.

I accidentally watched the video News piece. This isn't about the smell of smoking pot. It is about the smell coming from grow ops. Seems most of this could be avoided by growing in a non-residentially zoned area. It can be quite a pungent smell once they start blooming, especially if you have more than just a couple plants.

Disclaimer: not only do I hold an equity position in DICE Holdings (just joking), I didn't actually read TFA.
This reminds me of a simple gadget that one can use to detect a buried land mine. It's a square metal (or maybe plastic) tube, roughly 4" X 4" X 3'. I'd tell you the metric equivalent but I haven't been getting a whole lot of sleep lately.
You place the lower end on the ground, or maybe just close to the ground so as not to set of a mine, then quickly lift a small lever. This sucks some air into the tube.
Lining the tube are a bunch of chemical reagents, that glow when they are exposed to certain other chemicals. For example Ammonium Nitrate was used by Timothy McVeigh in the Oklahoma city bombing. I expect that it slowly outgasses very small amounts of Ammonia gas, that when it comes into contact with an Ammonia-sensitive reagent spot, just that one spot glows.
If any of the spots glow, a recorded voice very sternly shouts "MINE!"
But then its up to you what to actually do about it. :-/

I find this hilarious. They want to use olfactometers to detect weed because of it's apparently offensive smell but no such thing for tobacco. I don't particularly care for the smoke for either but I've always found weed to have a popcorn-type smell whereas tobacco has this horrible tar and brush fire smell.
I think we know what this is really about. They're having trouble reaching their quotas for seized items and fines (cops love using weed as an excuse to seize cars they like for example) and are now looking to even more stupid means to reach them.
