[Janrinok says: You may remember this story from a few weeks ago. Basically, the relevant bodies in Munich had decided that e-books of an extreme sexual nature could only be sold online between the times of 2200 and 0600. We discussed it, laughed at the concept of 'time' restrictions on something that covered the entire globe, and then we moved on... Well, yesterday we received a submission/letter from Joanna Kamermans, the author of the e-book in question, pointing out that she had read our story and comments and that she was appreciative of the publicity that her book had received. Not just the publicity from our site but from others that had also decided to publish or comment on the story. I will not print her letter here as it (and the links within it) are most definitely NSFW - but, of course, it can be found via the Original Submission link at the bottom of this story. It just goes to show that what we write and say here can travel far further than we might initially imagine. Those of you who wish to communicate further with Ms Kamermans may do so away from this site, but I should warn you that she describes herself as Johanna Kamermans (1938) - perhaps it is just a very common name in Bavaria or, perhaps not...]

Don't worry, the next story will be along in a moment.

Germany Says You Can't Sell Adult Ebooks Until After 10 PM 51 comments

Techdirt reports that the German government, armed with a law that has its origin in more captive content (movies -- the kind shown in theatres) and attempting to apply it to the internet (ebook sales).

Heise.de (German) and Boersenblatt (German) reported on Friday and Thursday that the Jugendschutzbehörde (Youth Protection Authority) has handed down a new ruling which extended Germany's Youth Media Protection Law to include ebooks.

As a result of a lawsuit (legal complaint?) over the German erotica ebook Schlauchgelüste (Pantyhose Cravings), the regulators have decided that ebook retailers in Germany can now only sell adult ebooks between 10 pm and 6 am local time (4 pm and midnight, eastern US).

It's pretty hilarious given that the Germans produce and enjoy some of the filthiest porn imaginable. Whippings, coprophilia, urinating, horses...

...I mean, like, you got a guy tied down to a tarp on the floor, and a woman stands above him and shits in his mouth. And he's asking for more while calling her a filthy schlampe. Then some whippings, then they both pee on each other. Then they bring the horse in.

You don't want to know what they do with that horse. I'd tell you what they do with that horse but I don't want to break any obscenity laws. What I can tell you is, all the things that people can do with each other, the people do with that horse.

Yes - in accordance with our guidelines. In many places, pictures depicting total or even partial nudity are considered taboo in the workplace. The link behind the submitter's name opened a web page containing partial nudity. Her own submission discussed anal sex. Hence it was tagged as NSFW - there was no mention of pornography in my summary.

Just for background information, any link depicting material that is not essential to the submission is usually removed by the editor. Trying to hide such links behind a submitter's name usually results in that submission being rejected. From the wiki page on the Editing Process:

.... it is essential that each link in a submission is clicked and checked. This is important not only to ensure that the link is functional, but also to remove links to unwanted material such as political electioneering, pornography, blatent advertising (also known as 'slashvertisements') and off-topic items. Sometimes such links can be the result of an error but, more often than not, they are an intentional attempt by someone to try to defeat the editorial system and to successfully 'troll' the site. Usually, such material is submitted by an Anonymous Coward but it can also be as a result of a misguided attempt at humour by a recognised community member. All such links should be deleted. Remember that we aim to be a global site and, while we should not and cannot comply with the laws of every nation, religion, or regional group, material which is likely to be offensive and is irrelevant to the story should be removed.
