tvcentury21.com has an article on the (funded) kickstarter effort produce a new Thunderbirds episode in the classic style:

Documentation producer Stephen La Riviere, the man behind the documentaries "Full Boost Vertical" and "Filmed in Supermarionation" is at it again. This time, its a project to produce filmed versions of the Thunderbird Century 21 EP stories from the 1960s. The basic idea is to retain the audio from the recordings, but film new Thunderbirds footage in the style of the original show. This means puppets and practical effects. Rather than try to fund it himself, or go to a distributor, he has taken the bold move to go directly to the fans and has created a Kickstarter project with the goal of funding the making of the first three EPs as mini-episodes.

I was a child during the 70s and I grew up with reruns of the Thunderbirds - translated into Spanish. I know many people can tell the same story, but in my case, I was in Chile during the 16 years of dictatorship under Pinochet.

For me, the Thunderbirds represented a world of hope. A world where some well intentioned heroes can act beyond the governments, at a global scale. That sense of freedom and justice was important for me, and it was an important trigger in a sense of imagination and possibilities, that of course was key in my drive towards science and technology.

I'll be proudly donating money to this effort, if anything, to show that there are other ways to see the world, and not all is CGI. I hope you support it too.

Sorry, today they would be declared terrorists and their island base would be wiped off the map shortly after their first launch. Most of them would be killed and/or indefinitely detained in some secret prison, except for Brains, who would be forced to work for the US military.

But my dad still showed me old episodes of the show when I was young. I feel like I grew up with that kind of a look to the future.

There have been several satirical shows come up lately that have ribbed on the puppets, but I kind of hope they keep that old camp. Something about the good old days.

I saw the originals as an adult, and always assumed that the symbolism was that the US aerospace/military complex was a bunch of puppets.
