The Hitchbot, a hitchhiking robot which was planned to tour the US has apparently failed to make it out of Philadelphia.

When hitchBOT the hitchhiking robot started his journey in Boston two weeks ago he wanted to see the entire country. Unfortunately, he never made it out of the Northeast. The researchers who built hitchBOT announced today that they need to stop the experiment because hitchBOT was vandalized in Philadelphia.
...
The goal of the hitchhiking trip was to see how humans would interact with hitchBOT. And apparently the answer was "not well." HitchBOT has been around the world, including trips across the entirety of Canada and Germany without major incident. But America is clearly a hard land for our robot brothers and sisters.

HitchBOT Touring the USA This Year 12 comments

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/07/17/can-robots-trust-humans-a-hitchhiking-bot-will-find-out/

As you read this, a three-foot tall robot is likely strapped into the passenger seat of a stranger's car, whizzing down some road outside Salem, Mass. Its pool-noodle legs, clad in yellow rain boots, are splayed out in front of it. Its solar panel-wrapped cylindrical body gleams in the sunlight. Its boxy face — which lacks a nose but features huge red LED eyes and an upside-down rainbow of a smile — swivels back and forth as it alternately makes conversation and peers out the window at the landscape passing by.

That's if it's lucky. If it's unlucky this intrepid droid, dubbed "HitchBOT" by the Canadian engineers who created it, is still perched on the side of the road somewhere, arm extended, thumbing for a ride. Or, if it's really unlucky, it's already dead — destroyed by weather or the malice of humans.

Determining which scenario turns out to be the right one is part of the mission for HitchBOT, who was launched on a hitchhiking journey across the U.S. Friday. The robot comes equipped with a GPS tracker, a camera, an opposable thumb and a bucket list of American destinations it aims to reach in the weeks ahead, relying solely on rides from sympathetic strangers.

It made it across Canada last summer, will motorists help it in the USA?

We Can Rebuild Him: Philadelphia Hackers Offer Brotherly Love to Fallen Robot 12 comments

Armed only with conversation software, the machine lasted just two weeks relying on the kindness of strangers to forward its journey. The US proved too much despite HitchBOT successfully traversing Canada and parts of Europe in 2014.

However, there may be a happy ending yet. Not willing to let robot violence scar its city, hackers and makers in Philadelphia are reaching out to the HitchBOT team to offer new life to the fallen Canadian after hearing about the robot violence.

"We'll say that at this moment, if we get the OK from the creators to repair or replace the needed parts for HitchBOT, we'll be happy to do so," wrote Georgia Guthrie, executive director for a local makerspace called The Hacktory. "If not, we understand... and we may just build ourselves a HitchBot2 to send along on its journey. We feel it's the least we can do to let everyone, especially the Robot community, know that Philly isn't so bad."

Perhaps one day they may become known to all robotkind as "Good Philadelphians."

Why am I not surprised that this has been labeled "Troll"
This new influx of shit-tier internet users cannot identify the difference between a true troll and someone with a dissenting opinion.
      Now for the real challenge:

The highest crime rate areas of the United States are invariably have large quantities of blacks.

      Atlanta
      Ferguson
      Detroit

That's just three cities out of a large pool.

Don't try to explain that it's all because of low income. When compared to the Appalachia's, black ruled regions are higher in crime.

If you want to look at crime world wide with a clear period of during white rule and after white rule, look no further than South Africa.
During white rule, South Africa was a first world country, home to world renowned farms, the first heart transplant, a space program, and nuclear weapons.
Afterwards, it turned into a crime-ridden wasteland run by a terrorist that invented "necklacing".

The whitest regions of the world (Scandinavian and Norther European countries) have consistently shown the world how to be the best.
These countries have been continuously used as examples by the media, and prominent social reformation advocates as how a country should be run.
These countries have the lowest crime rates world wide, and just so happen to have the lowest quantities of blacks.
They also have the highest standards of living, and excellent education systems (Finland).

It's racist to ignore the fact that black people breed cultures that promote and encourage violent behavior.
It's racist to ignore the fact that white men have built utopias while jealous, subversive elements continuously work to tear them down.

Lets put an end to all this fighting, and give black people a land to call their own.

      End racism now!
Lets send all so-called African-Americans back to Africa where they can live like the Africans they show lovingly emulate.

The ones voting "Troll" are working for the government. When a post is against the official propaganda, its votes are noted. Ok, quick lesson for all the "shit-tier" Internet users who supposedly cannot identify a Troll post. I'm assuming this group includes whoever wrote the post I'm replying to, you'll see why in a second. Also, it's worth nothing that I'm aware this may seem like I'm dignifying both the parent comments with a response - I'd like to point out that I don't make a habit of replying to AC posts like this and this post should serve only as an example indicating why all you folks who are apparently new to the Internet should do the same the rest of the time.

Consider the grand-parent comment, two sentences that, on the surface, appear to be rabidly offensive. They don't make any attempt to present a factual stance with correlating evidence, they use deliberately inflammatory language and escalate in the second sentence from a geographical localized generalization to including all people with a high melanin level in their skin. Given that no attempt what-so-ever is made to justify anything said in the comment, it's easy to tell that the poster is being racist to cause offense and inflame the sensibilities of rational people. In this case, a Troll moderation is entirely appropriate - a Flamebait moderation would also be appropriate if this was posted as a sub-comment intended to derail another discussion in progress.

Consider the parent comment. Note the use of profanity up-front, the abuse of crime figures with no attempt to provide any hard correlation between them and the racial makeup of the area, the attempts to stifle any discussion that doesn't fit the poster's own views, reference to a country that was famously institutional in it's racism, it's apologies and excuses for that racist state, broad generalizations and racial stereotyping based on geographic location, attempts to redefine the term racist to suit the views presented rather than the reality, followed by a call to action that would see millions of people displaced from the country and culture of their birth on the arbitrary distinction of the skin color of their parents.

Homework assignment - write a haiku describing your thoughts on allowing Troll moderation scores lower than -1 in exception circumstances such as these.

The highest crime rate areas of the United States are invariably have large quantities of blacks.

The NSA commits crimes in the trillions (according to NSA whistleblower William Binney). Not even counting the rest of the metric ton of crimes the federal government commits every day, that's enough to take the crown for "highest crime rate" by far.

Let's see, according to Wikipedia [wikipedia.org] the GDP for South Africa went from $80.5 billion in 1980 to $151 billion in 1995, when apartheid ended. So, it less than doubled. From 1995 to 2010, an equal 15-yr period, the GDP went from $151 billion to $363.6 billion. So, it more than doubled. The data indicates that South Africa has fared better economically under black rule than under white rule.

What you described more closely fits Rhodesia, when Mugabe defeated the minority white government and chased out skilled whites. But it also describes Uganda, when Idi Amin chased out skilled Asians. Maybe a more robust statement is not, "Race A good, Race B bad," but "Don't chase away all the people who know how to do stuff."

The whitest regions of the world (Scandinavian and Norther European countries) have consistently shown the world how to be the best.

Those places also have economies that are the closest thing to Socialism in the industrialized world. So is what you're saying an argument for Socialism?

Pro tip: when you're arguing from a place of bigotry, it's advisable to keep your various bigotries straight.

back in the late '70s-early 80's I remember reading about how someone had put a plywood cut out painted to look like a guy with a big thumb held out by the side of a highway somewhere in the South East (I think it was Georgia) with a note asking for it to catch a ride heading West to California and a request that anyone who picked it up send the creator a letter or postcard saying where they had found it and where they dropped it off.

Over the next 5-6 months the creator got dozens of postcards and letters with photos of the cutout standing beside state line signs, various national/state/local monuments and other famous road side stops. Eventually he received a photo showing it standing on Venice Beach, CA. looking not much the worse for its travels.

I knew soldiers who went out of their way to make sure no one went hungry on holidays and invited homeless to eat with them, and I knew those that literally bragged about torturing and murdering animals. I've had 30 years to see how evil humans are. There are some good ones out there, but they're rare. Even people who look nice, smell nice, and act nice can be more malicious than I'd have ever believed maybe twenty years ago. It's not just in the USA either. I fail to see how this is insightful. Inherently violent? Based on what information? Based on a couple internet news articles?(the Guardian maybe?) Based on the decisions of its leadership? These are hardly representative of the population as a whole, yes they were elected in our system, but that doesn't excuse taking them as the brush to paint the entire US population as violent.

I am a father of four daughters, my wife is a whisp of a thing (100lb), and I can say that I am not nervous about their safety, or my own. It isn't because I have armed them to the teeth. I haven't loaded them up with pepper spray. My daughters ride mass transit and my wife walks to work. I have had disagreements with others in public, none have gone to blows. I have witnessed plenty of disagreements in public, and none of them have ended in violence. If SpockLogic's statement were true, then in my 50 years, I would think I should have witnessed at least a few instances of "inherent violence".

We have our flaws, as do ALL countries. Saying the US is an inherently violent society is just wrong, and revising it to "inherently destructive" would be equally off.

Yeah, well Canada's a big country, so you can go a long way without seeing many people - depending on your route. Nunavut is the size of western Europe but only 35,000 people live there.

OTOH, if you go coast to coast, then you're pretty much guaranteed to pass through several major cities - especially if you're hitchhiking and, thus, following major traffic flows. That's a lot more than 1000 miles and you'll hit Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax at a minimum. 80% of the population lives along that route - the Trans-Canada Highway makes up much of it.
