The first seven awardees are:
Buildbot: $15,000. Buildbot is a continuous build and integration system which has been immensely valuable to Mozilla over the past few years. Their award will be used to remove the term "slave" from all documentation, APIs and tests, and also to make improvements so Buildbot works better in the Amazon EC2 cloud.
CodeMirror: $20,000. CodeMirror is a powerful source code editor built with Web technologies, used in the Developer Tools and in Mozilla Thimble. Their award will be used to improve support for both right-to-left languages and complex script input.
Discourse: $25,000. Discourse is online discussion forum software, used by several Mozilla communities. Their award will be used to make email a first-class interaction mechanism for Discourse, allowing Discourse instances to replace and improve upon mailing lists.
Read The Docs: $48,000. Read The Docs is a website for building and hosting documentation, used by many of Mozilla's Web projects. Their award will be used to add the ability to generate documentation from code without needing to install it, thereby making it easier to build the documentation for complex projects.
Mercurial: $75,000. Mercurial is a distributed source code management system, used heavily by Mozilla for core repositories such as mozilla-central. Their award will be used to implement better support for 'blame' (showing who last changed some code) and a better web UI.
Django: $150,000. Django is a popular server-side Web development framework, used in many Mozilla websites. Their award will be used to make Django suitable to be a back end for Web apps which use WebSockets.
Bro: $200,000. Bro is network monitoring software, which is at the heart of Mozilla's intrusion detection system for our network. Their award will be used to build the Comprehensive Bro Archive Network, a public repository of modules and plugins for Bro.

It's a change in terminology to better reflect change in architecture really. Before you had a Slave and Master, and the master had to tell the slave what to do and keep it in line. Now a days the worker systems can take initiative, working off of hooks... so I guess we can now call them "hookers," and the systems who collect their work can be called... I dunno, what is a cool term kids use now a days? "pimps"? Yeah let's go with that. So now we will have "Hookers and Pimps" instead of "Slaves and Masters"... pass it on.

A common symptom of autism is an inability to recognize subtleties and nuance. Ironically the guy accusing me having aspergers demonstrated that exact characteristic by failing to see that I deliberately made a faulty analogy to illustrate the illogic of the original post. I think it is great these projects are receiving money but what I don't like are the strings attached.
Here's X USD for project Y to do Z... This is how Mozilla got in the pocket of Google. Is this some sort of similar attempt to corrupt these projects? How long until we hear "and if you don't do X, we withdraw all the money and will sue you personally as maintainer to give us back the money we've given you in the past"...

Seriously? Master/slave when in the context of software, or circuits, etc needs to be purged from the code and documentation? I like the idea of Mozilla giving some money to some of the projects it uses... but the ear mark on this one seems just silly. Its all the more absurdist since they are giving $200,000 to "Bro"... yet that isn't earmarked to rename 'Bro' to something else, since 'bro'-culture is offensive to a lot of people too, especially women?

God the whining from you people is so annoying. Unless you can show that someone did apply for a grant to rename "Bro" with a plan that that had a good chance of success, there is no hypocrisy to whine about. Never mind that "Bro culture" is not a derogatory term, its self-applied. The day that people voluntarily and enthusiastically call themselves slaves then the comparison will be appropriate, until then all you are doing is failing basic SAT word analogy tests because slave::derogatory is not the same as bro::derogatory.

That doesn't make any sense. For one thing, it's false that people like me intend to offend with everything (where "everything" means "a lot"). Second of all, even if someone intends to offend you, that does not mean you're obligated to be offended. For instance, if I said "Hello." with the intention of being offensive, I imagine that that would not be very effective.

To elaborate on the difference here, imagine a software project called "KKK dashboard" a color correction tool for photos and video. KKK members self apply the label... so its not a derogatory term and I'm sure nobody will be offended.
For what its worth, I'm not offended by "Bro" software. And I'm not offended by the word slave in buildbot either. I think taking offense to either is ridiculous. But if I were the sort of SJW who was offended by the word slave in buildbot, I expect I'd be equally upset by "Bro" software; so its eyebrow raising that whoever at Mozilla thought slave had to be purged from buildbot didn't bat an eye at giving 200k to "Bro".

I expected this because it's happened in the past, both for Mozilla and for Wikipedia. I'm not interested in donating money to an organisation that donates to other organisations; that's just wasting money to me. I'm much rather that Mozilla just spent money on developing their browser. If there's too much money for that, then stop asking for more money.
