Moxie Marlinspike was a coveted speaker at security conferences. He uncovered elementary flaws in SSL certificate repudiation, posited flaws in SSH, and co-authored a specification for certificate pinning. However, after the acquisition of his startup by Twitter in Nov 2011, appearances and blog posts become significantly more sparse. With the exception of one post in Feb 2015, the blog has been unchanged since Dec 2013. Moxie's organization has released a succession of libraries and applications but Moxie seems to maintain a very low profile.

Unless there's reason to be concerned or an interesting story behind it all (neither of which appear to be the case, otherwise I assume mention would have been made), I'm not really sure why it's anyone business but his own. "Man fails to tweet or blog" is not a news story.

Maybe he's had more than enough of his 15 minutes of fame, and has enough money "after the acquisition of his startup by Twitter" that he's out there living the good life, sitting on a beach, earning twenny percent. I should be so lucky...

that would mean he's a fool who should have held out for at least twenty percent!

For those of us that have read his blog he could be:

Somewhere at the bottom of an ocean.
More likely on top of an ocean somewhere enjoying sailing.
Living in a squat, because fuck capitalism.
Riding the back of a train again, fuck capitalism.

The guy was about as anarchist as you can get.

Was quite a surprise to watch him sell out over and over again over the last few years.

I guess we all grow up huh?

Honestly? I expect to find him in Belize taking drugs with John McAfee. (Actually, I have no idea if he's a user. From his writing, probably not.)

Due to his work in crypto communications, and the fact that he is probably several orders of magnitude more interesting to your favorite $TLA than your average digital paranoid ( aka soylentals :) ), my guess is he is practicing good op-sec and keeping his public digital mouth shut. He does seem to be slightly more active on the Open Whisper System's blog though.

And that right there is the answer, folks. He's deeply involved in Open Whisper Systems [whispersystems.org] which has published cross platform applications for encrypted voice and SMS communications. If you read the ominous final blog post mentioned in TFA you'll see that he was hinting towards this work. He's not disappeared by any stretch, but rather appears to have been simply focused on making something truly innovative and polished.

I've seen him at several events over the past 2 years, he hasn't disappeared For Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzWsgV33h1w [youtube.com] He also did an interview with CNN back in December: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQYI8nJPGm8 [youtube.com] And yes, he does, at times, keep a low profile. He's a massive privacy advocate who likes to maintain his own privacy in things. Remember, we all have something to hide (even Moxie).

Considering Moxie Marlinspike is not his real name...

I don't half wonder how he has managed to keep his real name off of the internet.

How do you get to be Head of security of a company (Twitter) without your real name?

Though, ofc all we have is his blog and news reports about him.

Hard to separate the truth from fiction.

According to his comments on Hackernews [1] he's just fine.
