A Japanese utility reactivated a nuclear reactor Friday, the fourth unit brought back online under updated regulations following the triple meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in 2011.

Kansai Electric Power restarted Reactor 4 at the Takahama nuclear plant on the Sea of Japan coast, 400 kilometres west of Tokyo, following the resumption of Reactor 3 at the same complex in late January.

The latest resumption comes amid growing concerns about the safety of Reactor 4 following a leak of radioactive coolant water Saturday in a building attached to the unit.

In August, Kyushu Electric Power reactivated two reactors last year at the Sendai nuclear plant on the south-western island of Kyushu.

The other 44 reactors in Japan remain offline amid lingering public fears of nuclear power following the 2011 disaster.

As far as I know, there isn't even a plan to do anything for the damaged, leaking reactors at Fukushima, so we needn't start worrying for a long time (about Godzilla).

TEPCO is hoping to bring two older plants [japantimes.co.jp] on line next. In related news Japan is behind on alternative power efforts [japantimes.co.jp]. Looks like nuclear will be coming back strong.

BTW, Japan's mid census officially has confirmed that the population is now shrinking: http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2016/02/26/national/census-first-to-confirm-shrinking-of-population/ [japantimes.co.jp].

I have a friend who is a a first generation american. Her mother who is still a Japanese citizen (but a permanent resident of the US until recently) refused to relocate to Japan to have the kids raised there due to prejudice (In my friend's case her ethnic background thanks to her father made her look more Filipino than any of her actual ethnic backgrounds.)

Long story short: She's a through and through American Girl now (and not for the better) and would never consider living in Japan, and at the same time the few distant relatives in her age group left in Japan are looking at moving to the US or elsewhere due to a preference for non-Japanese girls as well as better business opportunities.

Japan surviving this trial is similiar to the US survival it's current and immediate future trials: Unlikely and requiring a societal shift on the level of the Beatnik or Hippie movements of the 50s-70s if they had succeeded instead of collapsing in on themselves.
