Actor and radio drama personality Erik Bauersfeld has died aged 93. Although a presence on the airwaves for many years, by far his most famous work was for a minor character in the Star Wars movie Return of the Jedi: rebel ship commander Admiral Ackbar. His line 'It's a Trap!' - spoken as the Rebellion attacks the Empire's Death Star - became an instant hit, remaining popularly quoted to this day. Together with Ackbar, Bauersfeld also voiced Jabba the Hutt's majordomo Bib Fortuna, and was considered for the role of Yoda which was eventually taken by Frank Oz.

I'm sorry to hear this. I had an Admiral Akbar toy as a kid. One of my friends in school swiped it, even today we joke about it. I wonder if he has any idea he inspired stuff like that across America.

    Farewell.

He seems to have inspired entire generations in the middle east: whenever I turn on the news on tv, I see people shouting "allahu akbar" while doing battle against the empire...

You're going to hell for that, and I'll be cleaning up a seat to sit on right next to you for laughing so damn hard.

I have some kids under age 6 that quote "it's a trap" not because they have seen star wars but because they got from a video game quoting star wars. I wonder how many other once removed references there are that make some ones first exposure to a cultural icon.

I remember people attributing quotes to actors for lines they delivered in a movie that were originally quoted from some other source that they had no idea about.
