The Indian transport ministry is experimenting with 3D paintings on highways to make motorists slow down: your jaw will drop when you see these pics! (Sorry... couldn't resist)

3D paintings of crosswalks are being placed on roads in order to try to slow drivers down and save lives.

The article has some cool pics that would DEFINITELY make me slow down at first, but how long will it take before the traffic speeds up again as drivers get used to seeing them.
The article also made me think of Dazzle camouflage: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dazzle_camouflage

Have they tried speedbumps? potholes? landmines?

Distracted driving is such an indirect method of causing accidents. I know! Highway cops firing RPGs into traffic!

Exactly, I guess their law has speed limits set... how about enforcing those. Give them a ticket when they are speeding too much.

Elementary solution. From time to time, replace the 3D representations with the real objects. After the first experience, the drivers will learn to look twice.

Agree. Even without taking unneccessary avoidance, they are so distracting that a driver staring at them might not notice the child about to run across.

Maybe that would be the case were you live.
But... from my direct (short) experience with India, in areas where zebras are direly needed, the danger is that you won't see them at all - plenty of people, cars, tuk-tuks, scooters, motorcycles, etc. obscuring them.
Hell, there were areas in which even the footpath weren't safe at rush hours: scooters and tuk-tuks were occasionally using them as an overtake lane.

Dude, who uses Zebra crossing in India? No one. They even used to advertise on national TV when I was a kid - "ruko dekho chalo, daye baye dekho, tabhi aage chalo", i.e., "stop look walk, look left right, then only walk" - so little children can learn how to cross roads wherever they want to.

In some industrialized countries they tried out scantly clad girls on the side of the road in order to sell clothes etc. It resulted in traffic accidents when male drivers had their attention elsewhere. So it ended with new regulations that forbid that type of advertising location.

How about if you speed to fast the cops takes your vehicle into storage for a month?

That would be a stupid solution for the Indian conditions... to an eye unaccustomed with the traffic in India, it really looks like the traffic "just happens" without any rule... you can pay me zillions and I wouldn't dare drive there.

Why it would be a stupid solution? Not only that one third of the India's budget will be wasted in building enough storage space for the impounded vehicles, but another third will have to be used for hiring enough cops and the last one will be wasted on towing/transporting those vehicles into storage.

Even worse, it wouldn't solve the problem, because the drivers of the tow trucks will be Indian drivers as well.

Editors, if someone submits a from-this-department line and you don't use it, just take it out of the damn story. Don't run yours and the submitter's. Just because some butt-hurt guy who refuses to use an account complained a day or two ago doesn't mean you should drop the site's best practices. That's near giving in to terrorism.
