The security blog of Opera browser has an interesting short write-up about a security breach that happened to them:
Earlier this week, we detected signs of an attack where access was gained to the Opera sync system. This attack was quickly blocked. Our investigations are ongoing, but we believe some data, including some of our sync users' passwords and account information, such as login names, may have been compromised.
[...] The total active number of users of Opera sync in the last month is 1.7 million, less than 0.5% of the total Opera user base of 350 million people.

Make sure it's a sturdy basket! It wasn't a sturdy basket? Oh no. How could this happen.

Why are the user details stored unencrypted in the first place? Talk about painting a target on yourself.

You are completely correct. I wish more browsers would use the Firefox Sync architecture, even if they are using different servers. Same function and encrypted.

350 million people use Opera? That just doesn't sound right. That number must be off a decimal place or six...

That's before you carve away the bots and user agent switchers. However, Opera Mobile [wikipedia.org] and Opera Mini [wikipedia.org] have been around since 2000 and 2005, and Opera was also used as the browser on Nintendo DS and Wii (not the 3DS or Wii U). Fudge some numbers and it can't be too hard to hit 350 million.

If it takes into account the multiple installations of Android and iOS versions, that may help explain the figure. It makes for a decent Android browser, with the built-in ad blocking.

Will someone please tell my why "sync" is in quotation marks in the headline of this story?

It wasn't there in my original submission. But does it really matter? :)

I would assume to identify Sync as a feature/service of Opera and not the action (as in 'to sync'). Without the quotes, but with standard headline capitalization, it could easily be confused with "sync affected" (which would have a very different meaning).
