BBC reports:

A lorry has ploughed into a busy Christmas market in the heart of Berlin, killing nine people and injuring many more, police say. Police say they suspect it was a deliberate attack. Video shows stalls knocked over and people lying injured. A suspicious person has been arrested nearby, while a passenger was found dead, police say. The market is at Breitscheidplatz, close to the Kurfuerstendamm, the main shopping street in the city's west. Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, tweeted to say: "We are in mourning for the dead and hope that the many injured can get help."

There are now reports from local police that 12 people have been confirmed killed in the attack.

Reuters reports:

A man stormed into a Zurich mosque on Monday evening and opened fire on people praying, injuring three, Swiss police said.

They said they had collected evidence inside the building and would make more details available on Tuesday. They declined to comment on the potential motive.

Two of the three men -- aged 30, 35 and 56 -- were seriously injured in the attack shortly after 5:30 p.m. local time (1630 GMT) near the main train station in Switzerland's financial capital, Zurich police said.

    Why would they shoot up a mosque? Are they non-Muslims taking revenge, or is it a Muslim factional dispute?

    Sigh. The best thing I can think of for the rest of the world to do about Islam is to stop using petroleum entirely. It removes the only reason for the rest of the world to meddle in their affairs, and deprives Islamic terror of the funds they use to visit their dysfunction on others.

      Too late. It isn't about meddling for oil anymore - meddling set up the conditions, now they are somewhat self-sustaining. Its about the fact that west is the 800lb gorilla. A gorilla that can be lured and is used to sitting wherever it wants without caring who it crushes.

      The asshole wing of the religion sees the west as a big stick they can use to hit conventional muslims with. Like a lever and a fulcrum - kill enough westerners (the fulcrum) and the lever will swing and do 1000x the damage to regular muslims. ISIS is just itching to bait Trump [businessinsider.com] into doing something that will indiscriminately harm muslims. They think it will drive the more secular into the arms of the fundie assholes and those who don't join the fundies, well no loss they aren't "real" muslims anyway.

        Without the need for oil, the 'west' could and would generally just abandon and ignore the middle east. Cease western supported air traffic and the financial influx generated by oil. That would dry up most of the funds used to arm and supply the terrorists. Without the outside focus on a 'common' enemy the various faction would fall into a vicious circle of hatred and the moderates would finally get tired of it and have them all put down.

          We could, and ultimately, we do need to stop meddling in their affairs as the terrorism that we've been fighting is largely coming from the Middle East. There's also the domestic terrorists, but it seems a tad easier to deal with terrorists if you're not purposefully inflaming tensions to have cause to fund defense contractors.

          At this point, it should be clear to anybody with two brain cells to rub together that continuing to interfere isn't working. At this point there have been so many mistakes made in the region by various administrations that even if we do adopt the right strategy, they'll write it off as being a strategy rather than a heartfelt effort to help.

          Best thing would really be to just stop supplying weapons to the region, stop permitting companies to do business with the region and let nature take its course. Unfortunately, that would probably not work as we already allowed the Israelis to gain nuclear weapons and I don't doubt that they're crazy enough to use them.

                There is a slew of news articles on the Western Sydney problem directly related to the number of muslims in the area.

                I went there recently to look for myself. Never have I seen so many police officers walking around in pairs in the shop areas. Tussles in the street. Angry looks from veiled women. Not the worst part though. Much of the area has been taken over by Vietnamese and Chinese immigrants who have built a new life in Australia. There is a vast rich society woven through the area with several cultures working and living together. Except the muslims. The locals now feel threatened by the muslims who are claiming Western Sydney for themselves. This results in conflict on the streets with bloodshed.

                Mohammad Hassan Al-Bayati appeared in Campbelltown Local Court on Thursday charged with committing an act of indecency towards the girl at the DFO Homebush shopping centre on Sunday.

                Cameras from inside DFO Homebush allegedly show Mr Al-Bayati then walked down one of the centre's corridors and into a locked fire exit stairwell.

                There were no cameras inside the stairwell, where Mr Al-Bayati and the girl remained for 11 minutes.

                It is here police allege Mr Al-Bayati exposed himself to the girl and performed an indecent act in what prosecutors described as an "opportunistic attack"

                "The child made disclosures about an act of indecency and stated that she was 'taken by a policeman' who was going to take her to her mum," police documents before the court state.

                Mr Al-Bayati was arrested and charged on Wednesday where he gave an interview with police where he admitted that he did breach the centre protocol by finding a lost child and taking her down the secluded corridor.

                But he denied allegations that he had performed an indecent act or exposed himself to the girl.

                "The accused could not provide investigators with any explanations for the unaccounted 11 minutes inside the stairwell with the child," police documents stated.

        Yes, those are generally known as extremists. They exist in all cultures. I will grant you that islam currently holds a pretty low ranking in "humanity" on a statistical basis, but every culture has its share of nutjobs. With Muslims being a rather significant percentage of humanity I think it is important to keep the distinction between violent and non-violent.

        The holy books of all religions say many things, but few even religious people take everything they say at face value. Most of the people who take what their religious books say completely literally, be they the Bible or the Quran, should be considered insane. Just as there are many denominations of Christians, there are many denominations of Muslims, and the Wahhabi sect of Islam whose doctrines you have described is like their equivalent of the Westboro Baptist Church or the various protestant denominations subscribing to extreme forms of dominion theology. The majority of other Muslims have denounced it as ‘vile sect’ and a ‘Satanic faith’. The only problem is Wahhabism has gained plenty of power and influence thanks to it being the favoured sect of the House of Saud and thus it received state sponsorship in Saudi Arabia, and the Saudis have used profits from petroleum exports to try to increase its influence worldwide. No, if we stopped buying their stuff, that would put a big dent in their ability to do that. If the West stopped meddling in their affairs that would make the fundamentalist doctrines of Wahhabi Islam less appealing.

        Most religious books have that stuff in them (for instance, the bible is full of it).

        If people act on it depends on circumstances.

        You can deny oil use and western policies have anything to do with it, but that would not solve the problems we have with islam atm.

        1. Kill them all
        2. Move them all to a single country to be contained forever (WIRM)
        3. Kill most of them
        4. Stop halal certification scams
        5. Stop recognising islam as a religion
        6. Classify islam as a terrorist organisation with clear intent, funds, man power and will to do so. Respond accordingly.
        7. Ask islamists nicely to stop killing everyone else in the name of their god

      The best thing I can think of for the rest of the world to do about Islam is to stop using petroleum entirely. It removes the only reason for the rest of the world to meddle in their affairs,

      Seems to work out for Pakistan just fine? Or Afghanistan? Right... UK and France wanted to draw borders in the sand, and now there are problems.

      It's not about meddling in local affairs anymore. And it's not even about Islam anymore (and their need for Reformation). What we see today is crazy people that want to have their 5 minutes of fame, and it's sadly working. The 24h news cycle, and now the 10-second twitter/facebook message cycle is what is fueling quite a sizable proportion of this crap.

      So what do you do about it? Censor ourselves? Seems like a good way of moving forward. The world doesn't stop, and is definitely not affected by relatively minor, local events like these. What is affected is our perception of the world and only we can fix that.

      Extremists are always a problem and always will be. The problem is with extremists that have influence and that get societies to follow them. And that problem is sadly not that remote anymore mostly because of "newsworthy"

      I think we have worse problems in our world than an asshole every couple of months killing some people and claiming it was supposed to promote a "religion" of "devotion and love". I'm not defending any lunatic terrorists, but once again the main-suspect was a known petty-criminal, not a devoted deciple. Let's stop dignifying such disgusting acts as some kind of religious culture-clash or overture of some doomsday dark age.

      Btw: I'm working in Berlin, right now passing by the area where it happened. If I considered Berlin a terror-war-zone I'd have the same reason to be scared as anyone else here. I don't and I'm not. I hope the rest of my fellow citizens stay level-headed as well!

          To my line of argument it does not matter if he was a refugee or not. For a credible religious lunatic, I expect he follows the rules of his religion, which means: No alcohol, no theft, no other drugs etc. Only the no-killing part is omitted because of this "war"-thing in "holy war". I can't find the link anymore, but yesterday evening I read that this guy was a police-known petty-criminal.

          We (as in USA, EU and associates) are destabilizing the middle-east for decades. We (as in especially Germany) deliver weapons to autocratic regimes and cause a lot of mayhem in many little and bigger ways. It is no surprise to me that people growing up in those regions tend to be a bit biases against "our" culture, and maybe a bit frustrated. Probably the more they learn about politics, the more frustrated they get, and at some point the frustration will in some cases exceed the gratitude of some refugees to be allowed into our land after we orchestrated the destruction of theirs. I just think that religion is the crystallization-point for all the anger, not the cause.

          I'm not justifying the attacks; I didn't harm anyone in those regions, neither did my son or my wife, and people living here should try to make their living here. I'm also not convinced it would be justified to just pull out of that region immediately. I'm just saying if we stop messing up their countries, maybe we wouldn't have so many refugees coming here, and maybe those who do come here would be less inclined to do any attacks.

          Of course, there is a distinct possibility that if those countries aligned in peace and collaborated among each other, oil prices would be uncomfortably higher for us...

            I don't know if this will help your thinking - but Islam separates the world into two distinct and separate parts. Dar al Islam is the House of Submission. Dar al Haarb is the House of War. If you don't live in, if you aren't part of Islam, then you are of the House of War.

            Each and every person has their own story to tell about their involvement in this huge war. All those stories are very human. But, bottom line, Islam stands against all the rest of the world. Islam isn't so very different from old England, or any of the rest of the old European aristocracy - except that Islam's priests rule Islam instead of an aristocracy. Or, maybe the priests are the aristocracy?

            Anyway - back to the refugees. The refugees are predominantly military aged males, who have left their families back at home, to deal with the war. They aren't really refugees, at all. They are on a mission to subvert Europe, and to subvert Western culture. The term "refugee" can only be used sarcastically, in most cases.

              You do realize that the transit to Europe is quite dangerous and can only be achieved illegally, while once you are here and are accepted as a refugee you are permitted to get your family here as well? Like, if you can't pay the human traffickers they will sell your body parts to reimburse their expenses? Hungary partially coming down violently on potential refugees? You realize, maybe, that many of the Syrian refugees are actually Christians? Well, probably you didn't. Otherwise it would be obvious, why they do not send children and young women here.

              There are a lot of problems, among the refugees as well as between the refugees and locals. There is harassment from Islam refugees against Christian ones (especially targeted at converts). There are cultural differences, and especially women are probably not permitted by their family to make the necessary effort to integrate (learn German, study, etc.). There are probably many men having difficulties adjusting to a society where women can be in a position of power, and where they have to obey women in some cases. There are lots of frustrated young men who probably used to be king of the hill back home and are now not even able to communicate enough to buy a packet of cigarettes. I would be happy if Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq etc. could be considered safe and there wouldn't be any reason for anyone to seek for asylum here. But it's not the case, and our politics is one of the root-causes.

Both the birds and the tree represent the celebration of the calendar starting to go towards longer days and spring. Oh, and guess why Yule falls just a few days after the shortest day of the year...

          The Christmas tree has as much to do with Christmas as Santa Claus, representing consumerism dressed in the corporate colors of the Coca Cola Company.

          I used to live next door to a small mosque in an area of london that was heavily* pakistani and the most discomfort it caused me was when, during the big religious festivals like ramadan, there were too many people praying so they'd spill out on to the street and you'd open the front door to a couple of dozen people kneeling on prayer mats on the pavement. Oh, the horror.

              Islam and Christianity had similar goals when they were established. The difference is - Christians saw the need to spread the word. For only part of their history did they see a need to spread the word at the point of a sword. Islam was all about the sword from it's inception, and nothing has changed since then. More, Islam demands that infidels be killed, or enslaved. Only the "children of the book" are permitted to live, and then only if they pay the proper tributes/taxes.

              Islam controlled half of Europe in the past (partly due to the Catholic Church permitting them to do so). They'll do it again if you're not smart enough to learn from history.

              Everything that western society believes in, is anathema to Islam. Gay rights, women's rights, democracy, voting, capitalism, everything.

      Also the Zurich shooting was committed by a Swiss national who was apparently leaning towards occultism (and his victims were Somali rather than stereotypical Arab muslims).
      And regarding the Berlin atrocity, IMHO it is much more likely to be a false flag attack of some home-grown right wing group - surely a professional terrorist organisation would have bothered to send someone would actually knows how to handle such a truck to maximum effect. Hopefully the bullets used to kill the Polish trucker (another amateurish move in my eyes, unless the perpetrator had a grudge against Eastern Europeans undercutting local wages ?) will lead somewhere quickly.

        The thought occurred to me as well, since afaik most muslim terrorist attacks are done either with planted bombs or as suicide-attacks. The casualty-rate could have been higher, and had the driver stepped out of the truck guns blazing after he crashed it, he would have had a much stronger effect. But I don't want to fall into the trap of wishful thinking or similar just because I disapprove of racicsts and right-wing fear-mongers. Both sides are morally capable of and motivated for such attacks.

          Well, that has changed. Muslim attacks in Europe now involve driving large vehicles into crowds. Guns give away that an attack is going to happen. Vehicles are easy to obtain. Anyone can learn to drive.

          Muslims can win this war by killing 50 to 100 people at a time. It is cheap and effective. All it costs is a vehicle and a single person. They have lots of people to sacrifice for their cause.
