Many thanks to all those who contribute to make SN such a wonderful site. I wish you all a very happy, prosperous, peaceful and healthy new year. May your fondest wishes come true in 2017. Cheers !!

The staff are all volunteers from the community and remain a part of it whilst staff - so to me the story reads a little oddly, there is no staff v community / them n us here - just a bunch of people from within the community with the time, inclination and ability to leave ideology aside whilst attending to staffy matters. Sure we have heated debates in #editorial and #soylent, flame each other in comments etc. - but when it comes to running the site, that all goes to by the by and what needs to be done gets done. I think that speaks volumes about all those involved (staff or not) and I am happy to finally collaborate with, for want of a better word, intelligent adults.
I'm also happy TheMightyBuzzard missed his last chance to call me a damn idealogical socialist or some such non-slur in 2016 by dint of either being off fishing or napping.

Let's deconstruct this. I can only speak for myself here.
What I get out of it? Nothing in the traditional sense of "getting" something.... there is no financial reward or a badge that can be pinned to a CV/resume to be gained here. The reward is being around intelligent people who just get stuff done, in a place where we can disagree without resorting to personal attacks.
The Compulsion... is the lack of compulsion. No-one is compelled to do anything on SN. It's a group or community effort - a place we create for ourselves and shape as we see fit.
