Greetings Commanders, Cerebrates, and Executors,

We're proud to announce that StarCraft will be patched for the first time in over 8 years today. The patch will go live at 2:00 PM PDT.

When patching, please use the 'Run as Admin' option; it is required during your first client run to migrate saves and avoid issues from Windows system admin changes.

StarCraft will be free with this patch as well. We'll add a link here when the patch is live.

Installers

https://battle.net/download/getInstallerForGame?os=WIN&version=LIVE&gameProgram=STARCRAFT
Mac:
https://battle.net/download/getInstallerForGame?os=MAC&version=LIVE&gameProgram=STARCRAFT

Which are you, Human, Protoss, or Zerg?

A battle.net account is required in order to download it, as the links above point to a download tool for the game.

If anyone has an offline install for it, please share it.

At least EA released Command & Conquer as Original ISOs so you could play the game as it was or patch up as preferred.

Soylent seems to have picked some stupid links. I downloaded it when the same story was on the green site a couple of days ago, with a different link. It seems to download and install fine without creating any kind of account. I started it and got to the start of the single-player mission as a quick test - all seems to work fine. You probably need battle.NET for online play.

...which currently has the same links for downloading. Seeing "4 hours ago" written there, I wondered whether the page had been changed since you saw it. However an archived copy from yesterday also says "4 hours ago" and has the same download links.

        > Soylent seems to have picked some stupid links.

You're right. The link text in the summary shows this:

        Win:
        https://battle.net/download/getInstallerForGame?os=WIN&version=LIVE&gameProgram=STARCRAFT
        Mac:
        https://battle.net/download/getInstallerForGame?os=MAC&version=LIVE&gameProgram=STARCRAFT

but what it actually links to is corrupted because the ampersands have been removed:

        https://battle.net/download/getInstallerForGame?os=WINversion=LIVEgameProgram=STARCRAFT

        https://battle.net/download/getInstallerForGame?os=MACversion=LIVEgameProgram=STARCRAFT

By following the links displayed as the link text, rather than the corrupted ones that are missing their ampersands, the Starcraft-Setup.exe and Starcraft-Setup.zip files may be downloaded.

When I tried posting this with the URLs enclosed in "<code>...</code>" my post didn't render correctly in the preview. One of the URLs became a clickable hyperlink, and there was some gibberish about "url2html".

I bought TA when it was new, but re-bought it on GOG a couple of years back for about £2, including the expansion packs that I never bought back in the day, because it was worth the £2 to not have to faff around with the CDs.

You'll need the patch if you want to play against someone who has the new version:

[...] the new patch will include two important updates: the ability to connect to and play against owners of the upcoming remastered version, and the change to a wholly free product.

For anyone else that was confused by the wording, the SD version is getting a patch and it allows you to play the SD version for free and play against people with the remastered HD version on battlenet. The remastered HD version you have to pay for. I was wondering why Blizzard would even bother redoing the game or making it free but it makes sense now. It's sort of like retroactive DLC/microtransaction to get shinier graphics for something you probably already own.

Which are you, Human, Protoss, or Zerg?

I am, um, what are you talking about? Some of us have real lives, so we do not get all your snarky references to
World of Warcraft. Maybe I am that faction you never, ever, anticipated, the one that will be your doom, and the Doom of Blizzard (wow, that sounds like a great name for a, wait for it!!! Calling Dave Barry, yes, Dave, OK, we'll go with it: rock band!!!) , the non-on-line-gamer. I let you go, now. Your existence means nothing, except for those who need to be distracted from the meaninglessness of their lives. You are Wraith. Even free, is not free enough. I give you, "Windows 10"!!! Arrrrrghhhhhuuuuh! Oh, the pain!!!!!! There has been a major disruption in the money train continuum! As if many stockholders cried out, and were silenced, because they were stockholders and not real people who were actually doing anything productive, and they were making money of of OCD people doing nothing productive, so the whole thing comes full circle, and we are left, with nothing. This whole house of cards will collapse, advertising or no. Trust me, or bet against me. Gamer.
