Turkish police arrested the online editor of the Cumhuriyet newspaper on Friday, an unidentified police official said.

Oguz Guven, the editor-in-chief of cumhuriyet.com.tr, was taken to Istanbul police headquarters, the official said on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media.

The official said an arrest warrant was issued for Guven after the online edition published an article about the death of Mustafa Alper, the chief prosecutor of Denizli province, in southwest Turkey, who was killed in a car crash on Wednesday.

Early on Friday, Guven tweeted, "I am being taken into custody", without elaborating further.

Sigh. Poor Turkey.

    This happened late last month:

Turkish authorities said they had arrested more than a thousand "secret Imams" who had infiltrated police forces [...]

Another 9,103 personnel from Turkey's police force were suspended [...]

    Sigh. Poor Turkey.

I agree with that. Turkey is even poorer than the US.

Having Trump and Erdogan in the same room will be fun to watch.

"No, I have the biggest codpiece!"
    "NO, I DO, Mine's Yuge!"
"No, My codpiece is five times bigger than your hands!"
    "Go home to Turkey!"

No american news agencies will be allowed in the room, only turkish reporters.
Turkey will publish a photo of the two smiling and happily comparing dick sizes.
Erdogan will clearly have the larger dick.
In the background of the photo Erdogan's aide will be seen stuffing a stack of classified documents into his attache case.
Without any evidence to dispute the turkish reporting, Trump will tweet that he is the bigger dick.

Erdogan is driving Turkey to hell. Wonder what he's got planned for the future? Maybe he'll challenge Little Kim for positions as "Most Paranoid Leader", or "Most Deranged Executioner". Expect some nuclear tests in the not-distant future. And, lots of missiles to fall into the Med. Next up, a flood of refugees from Turkey, instead of refugees who have passed through Turkey.

Apparently, though, he's still popular within the country. People support his paranoia, and they backed his forces during the attempted coup. Will that last, or is he squandering all the good will he did have?

My take is that it'll take time for the other shoe to fall. Right now, there's a stream of propaganda showing Erdogan acting as an effective leader without much to contradict it. The opposition has been crushed. Meanwhile the truth will take time to seep in. A country doesn't fall apart instantly. And even when there are enough dissatisfied built up to effectively oppose this tyranny, they still have to organize. Finally, one merely needs to look next door at Syria to see that even in the worst circumstances, tyranny can endure.

My thoughts too. Right now they are members of NATO where the codes for the nukes must be signed by the US president. It's not far fetched to consider a realignment with Putin (or the middle east) and North Korea style testing, building and lashing out. Not to forget incursions into neighboring countries. Or maybe the old style state sponsored terrorism which is a whole another level than the loose gangs acting out right now.

Having a look at the beliefs and practices of the population, geostratic position and industrial base gives some hints of possible scenarios. However the industry may soon be lost.

Turkey has long been an outlier in the Muslim world. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk established Turkey as a secular nation almost a century ago. Many years ago, Turkey was even more modern than much of the western world.

Well, that was unusual. We'll miss it.

Turkey's future is that of a typical Muslim nation. Do not be surprised by Sharia and all the rest. The non-Muslims, homosexuals, and adulterers (many actually rape victims) can expect death.

Turkey has issued arrest warrants for more than 85 people in the Energy and Education ministries. [dw.com] today. Already 50 000 people has been targeted this way in all professions.

Seems so similar to another state that rounded people up, reformed school to a indoctrination system, forced people into a belief system, used political courts etc. Only need a few more actions to have the full replica.
