The new Dr Who has been announced....
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-40624288
I'll get the popcorn..

Jodie Whittaker has been announced as Doctor Who's 13th Time Lord - the first woman to get the role.

She was revealed in a trailer that was broadcast on BBC One at the end of the Wimbledon men's singles final.

The Broadchurch star succeeds Peter Capaldi, who took the role in 2013 and leaves in this year's Christmas special.

Whittaker, 35, said it was "more than an honour" to become the Doctor. She will make her debut on the sci-fi show when the Doctor regenerates in the Christmas Day show.

Here are Jodie Wittaker's entries on Wikipedia and IMDb.

Doctor: "She was my first friend, always so brilliant, from the first day at the Academy. So fast, so funny. She was my man crush."

    Bill: "I'm sorry?"

Doctor: "Yeah, I think she was a man back then. I'm fairly sure that I was, too. It was a long time ago, though."

Bill: "So, the Time Lords, bit flexible on the whole man-woman thing, then, yeah?"

Doctor: "We're the most civilised civilisation in the universe. We're billions of years beyond your petty human obsession with gender and its associated stereotypes."

Bill: "But you still call yourselves Time Lords?"

    Doctor: "Yeah. Shut up."

Judging by the sheer number of people on brain pills or some sort of therapy, it seems most of the human race needs professional help coping with the 21st century.

In my mind, tells me we have been progressing in the wrong direction, and the 21st century needs to change direction before it all goes to shit.

I've been watching the classic Doctors, and i kind of wish they'd do longer serials, instead of finishing it up in just one or two episodes. Have fun with it (but not 'Rock and Roll Doctor' fun), get back to exploring more.

    Should be intelesting!

But i'd say about time for a change in genders: but how logical will the new Doctor be? ;)

Shall have to catch up on the newer Capaldi's and start watching the new Doctor.

And the reboot, while it had some good story arcs in the early years, became far too concerned with mysticism and the Doctor's 'god-complex', rather than running on the combination of educating of the companion and seemingly bumbling into a series of troubles before wrapping it all up in a mission successful box at the end, leaving a trail of bodies, mutually assured enemies, and worth saving civilians in its wake.

Having skimming most of this past season, I was disappointed with their handling of Bill, the Doctor, and She-Doctor. And personally I find it tacky that *NOW* they choose to replace *THE* doctor with a woman, rather than having worked around the reincarnation dilemma by moving on to a new character on new adventures through the time-o-sphere, possibly with a different attitude and moral compass to the tired direction the Doctor has been going for over 10 years now.

Hell, even Red Dwarf has done a better job on its recent seasons and that is despite getting quite long in the tooth. At least it doesn't take itself seriously to begin with!

Ever since the new series started, there has been this whole God-complex thing going on with the Doctor, something that never was (as far as I remember!) included in the original series.

But since the new series has started, there have been how many 'mystical doctor regeneration messiah have faith in me blah blah blah' moments throughout the series (often in a finale) where they pull a deus ex doctoria out of a hat and Mr Messiah saves all the plebs who chose to put their faith in him when the end times have finally come.

I mean seriously. If I wanted that shit I'd go watch the Christian channel.

IMHO Dark Matter, Killjoys, The Expanse, and if you're feeling for British humor, Red Dwarf, are all doing better at enjoyable sci-fi adventures without relying on overt deux ex machina of that scope. And usually when it *DOES* happen, it is opening up a new plot point surrounding the story's universe/characters rather than just wrapping up the episode, as it has been with Doctor Who episodes for going on ~8 years now, maybe longer?

No it wasn't. The character started as that weirdly aloof, INTJ science teacher you had where his fallibility made him likeable and relatable. Then the new series made the character into an unbearably smug prick with a messiah complex.

Something else that wasn't included was the instant technological deus-ex gratification. Building and perfecting any device is difficult, more difficult still if you are building a device to save the world while up against the clock. The original series understood this and used it to create tension and drama. The new series is a fucking soap opera promoting the mentally retarding common core educational agenda. When you find yourself wishing the doctor and his retarded, irritating companions would be exterminated or die a horrible death, it's time to stop watching the show.

Yeah. It's got my interest at least. If previous episodes that made me lose interest are any indication of where the series is headed, I have a feeling that it'll dive-bomb straight into 3rd wave TERFeminist bullshit about how womyn-born-womyn (which the Doctor will now count as, because reasons) are superior, complete and perfect beings.

You've got a gender-changing character on your hands! I mean, oh my fucking gawd, how goddamned thickheaded cisgendered people can be! One would think that the time lord/lady's ever-changing gender between regenerations (which the Doctor has somehow exempted herself from up until this point, maybe by special dispensation from the Lord President or somecrap) would render appeals to a gender dichotomy where womyn-born-womyn are superior, complete beings and assigned males are inferior, incomplete beings senseless! Even attempting to speak about womyn-born-womyn and assigned males—and cisgendered people know how to do little else—will force the showrunners to construct a caste system based solely on the happenstance of a time lord/lady's birth. We'll find out that the Doctor was actually assigned to the superior gender caste back on Gallifrey by merely happening to have been born with a female form, despite spending centuries with a male form, and I am expecting to be totally gobsmacked by whatever that will be said to imply.

Expect a full season of reifying womyn-born-womyn cosmic hegemony. Make a drinking game out of the amount of transphobic and homophobic (but never lesbophobic, perish the thought!) bullshit that comes out of the Doctor's mouth.

I guess that's fine since the show hasn't been able to keep a coherent plot about a logically-consistent setting in years, and that was what really made me lose interest in the first place. Yeah, I gather all the classic Doctor Who was episodic, but I don't like episodic shows where no knowledge gained about the story's setting and characters during one episode can be applied in any meaningful way to later episodes. Oh well.

No, I don't think so. I expect pro-transexual and pro-homosexual storylines that are so awful that homosexuals and transexuals will rally against them. SJW preaching is just awful, people are not being oppressed and the majority of people are heterosexual and got it many years ago. The more the far left beat the drum of identify politics, the more embarrassing and off-putting it becomes for the majority. We're going to have to bring back the lunatic asylums aren't we?

They already did this by turning the Master into Missy, excellently played by Michelle Gomez (she is awesome all the time, in all shows she is in). I just don't see this or like this happening to the Doctor, but I'll watch a few episodes and give it a shot. I just don't have very high hopes for it. Broadchurch wasn't really all that good -- the first season was ok then it went downhill really fast. In general this feels like a typical shit move that goes around these days by turning white male protagonist into characters of different races or genders -- somehow it rarely or ever happens the other way around at least I can't recall any but I could be wrong. That said the entire last season with Capaldi wasn't exactly the best season ever made, out of the new doctors I still prefer Tennant and Eccleston.

I had never watched the first doctor until a couple of years ago. I just assumed since it was a TV show from the 60s, and most TV from that time period is garbage, that I wouldn't like it. Woah, was I blown away. I absolutely loved every episode of William Hartnell's doctor. Excellent show. I wish there was more of it to watch and that many of the episodes had not been destroyed.

Still really don't like Troughton, Pertwee, or Davison runs at all.

Sure they have. The daleks were originally collectivist sociopaths, they were nazi's. In the new show, they haven been increasingly reduced from characters with political agency to mere props at the same time as the show glamorised collectivism and sociopathy (via the missy character). I'm afraid the original daleks ideology is preferable to that of the modern show. [thedailymash.co.uk] That is when you know the series has gone "full retard".

Come on, a female Doctor? That ain't how you SJW in $current_year guys, need more than a lousy one pointer. Add on lesbian, non-white or something. Trans, that is what counts as edgy in $current_year though. So they could have the Doctor's long standing male persona come through, making him a male trapped in a woman's body... for 'real' and then he could F-M transition. THEN they could make the show socially relevant with some "very special episodes", and isn't that what is important?

Jodie Whittaker is not the first woman to play the Doctor. Back in the 1980s, Ryan K. Johnson produced a series of four fan-produced episodes, starring Barbara Benedetti as the Doctor [wikia.com]. She was very good in the role, even though, from what I've read, she had no idea what Doctor Who was. (The link contains links to the story entries, which contain links to the videos. It's worth watching the regeneration scene in the first story, where the Doctor, instead of lacking a petty obsession with gender, is very upset about her DNA matrix having fouled.)
