The U.S. Marine Corps will soon have its first female infantry officer. The unnamed lieutenant is expected to lead an infantry platoon of about 40 marines:
The Marine Corps is set to have its first female infantry officer, a milestone in its nearly 250-year-long history.
The lieutenant is scheduled to graduate with her all-male peers on Monday after she completed all of the graduation requirements in the service's grueling 13-week Infantry Officer Course, the Corps said. Her completion of the course was first reported by The Washington Post. The officer's name was not made public.
The course was opened to women in 2012, and on an experimental basis. More than 30 women attempted it, but when none passed, the course was once again closed to females in the spring of 2015. After the Pentagon opened all military jobs to women, four additional women tried the course without success.

Gender studies is an interesting field. Having a gender identity that does not map to "man" or "woman" must be lonely, painful, and difficult. But resorting to semantic archana to redefine "man" and "woman" as something other than standard is passive aggressive. More, it's weak.

Actually, the only real benefit to peeing standing up, is the writing. You can write your name in the snow. Also works on sand. If you have the capacity, entire sonnets or mid-sized poetic works are possible. But really, a pen and paper are much more convenient, and longer lasting, than any penis and any medium. So really it is a faux advantage.

The important question to ask is, was she born a female? The articles aren't clear about this.
I'm not joking, either. Too many times I've seen news articles that are trying to be politically correct referring to "females", only to later find out that these "females" were born as males, lived until into adulthood as males, still have a penis/scrotum/testes, and only feel that they're "females".
The significance of this story can differ a lot based on what the reality is.
A female who was born female accomplishing this after so many others have failed could make this a big deal. There are many obstacles that were overcome, including many physical and mental ones that most males would struggle with.
A male who just prefers to be referred to as a female accomplishing this doesn't seem as significant.

Technically, "she" could be pre-op trans, as in born male but feels like a girl and still pees perfectly well standing up. Which fits in with the whole HIPPA like thing about not naming her. You can name an infantry officer in public; the trans issue gets into disclosure of medical illness territory. This theory seems to fit the observed facts pretty well. I'd be willing to guess "she" was recently a "he" and medically is still a dude or at least is still peeing standing up.
This is also going to be an interesting issue for the Olympics. If its not handled carefully basically all "female" world records and medals will soon be held by born-male-trans-call-me-a-woman people. Yeah I know it sounds crazy but devoted athletes have done crazier stuff to win...

Also this isn't the first time a "girl" has done a "boy" job and historically the .mil absolutely poops itself with journalistic excitement. However WRT medical information about specific service members, historically the .mil goes all secret squirrel. In combat, many aspects of toughness have nothing to do with physical strength and much to do with mental resilience. So-called "modern" combat, conducted in the middle of civilian populations, calls for even more of the mental skills and stability under pressure that most women outperform most men. There have already been stories of female soldiers (yes, they were Army) making breakthrough improvements in relations with the locals. I will be interested to see the effect of a woman leading a platoon of Marines on Middle Eastern civilian populations.

Men and women are NOT interchangeable cogs. We do not, in point of fact, WANT them to be. If we are putting women into direct combat situations, one of two results must occur, both terrible in different ways.
First lets put a few hatefacts onto the table. Men are hard wired to defend women, especially those in their ingroup. It doesn't get a lot more "ingrouped" than an infantry unit. Men can, do, and should defend their women at the cost of their own lives because women are more valuable to the tribe / nation. None of the nation state or non nation state actors we are likely to fight even pretend men and women are alike and can and do subject female prisoners to horrors not available to males who fall into their hands. All of our fighting men, and women, know this.
1. Knowing all of the above but commanded by the political leadership to integrate women into the combat arms, the American military does what it always does, follows orders and finds a way to achieve the goal put before it. Yea! Equality! Men and women serve in combat and no problems occur, their superior training has Immanentized The Eschaton and everything is great and we win a great victory on the battlefield. Nope. Sooner or later the war ends and the soldiers muster out into civilian life. And the men are now monsters who should, under no circumstance, be permitted to reintegrate into civilized life. They have been reprogrammed to, even under life and death stress, treat women as if they are men. Think about the implications. The couple of women in their unit might be She-Thor but when they punch out their much weaker spouse, because they are treating them like a man and she hit him, he is likely to kill her because she is a typical female. Yet by what law can he be charged? He was carefully reprogrammed by the United States Government to do exactly what he did. If a man hits you it is permissible to defend yourself, to punch back. If we are building a Foreign Legion we might consider this idea, but not with an all volunteer army where most only serve a few years.
2. They US Military proves unequal to the task of defeating the firmware built into the Human animal by a billion years of evolution. We lose a war. To the victor goes the decision of whether to continue putting women into combat.

You, Sir, are ignorant. Remember Beruit City, 1978? I was there to welcome the grunts ashore. I'm a destroyer man, and we don't wait for jarheads to show us how to get ashore.
Alright, I'll throttle the bravado down just a little bit. All of us destroyer men were scared shitless that we were facing five different armies at the same time, each jockeying for position around the city we were trapped in. Those jarheads coming ashore were the most beautiful people we had ever seen in our lives. But, still - safety of the ship? You're ignorant.

This must be one tough lady to get this far and hold her own with the guys. I know a retired woman California Highway Patrol officer who is tough as nails, both physically and psychologically. If she were 25 years younger I could see her trying something like this.
And to the people who have noted that she has to squat in order to piss, that may be a bit of a hazard but at least she doesn't have to shave every morning (at least I hope not).
It's really quite a simple choice: Life, Death, or Los Angeles.
