Way to go, New York City! All 1,200 schools in the New York City public school district will now offer a vegan hummus option every day at the beginning of this school year, thanks to The Coalition for Healthy School Food (CHSF), a non-profit that helps introduce plant-based foods into schools. Vegan options for students that are available on the school’s vegetarian menu will range from Mexicali Chili, Lentil Stew, Lentil Sloppy Joes, Braised Black Beans with Plantains, and Zesty BBQ Crunchy Tofu. These yummy meals will be on rotation for the vegetarian menus.

And this isn’t CHSF‘s first initiative to help students have access to fresh, healthy food. CHSF has worked with the city’s department of education to help three NYC schools, Active Learning Elementary School in Queens (PS244), Peck Slip School in Manhattan (PS343), and The Bergen Elementary School (PS1) in Brooklyn, to transition to an all-vegetarian menu.

How can they have any pudding if they don't eat their meat?

Now what will be gained in health will be lost through lost productivity through constant bathroom breaks and malnutrition. Oh wait, veganism isn't healthy because it's eating pure carbs and staying hungry because bodies aren't getting the nutrition they need.

      stupid CSB.

I went to high school in the 70s. Had a spanish class right after lunch, lunch was spent in the bushes behind the football stadium smoking weed. Got to class one day, a movie was playing. I said out loud "I hope to hell that's not focused". Turned out it wasn't focused.

Next CSB, spanish teacher was smokin hot. Turned out she was also pregnant (she was married). She did not last the semester, I wish her nothing but good vibes across 45+ years.

Next CSB, I used to sell hash in high school. Bought an ounce, cut it into fourths, sold 3 to friends and broke even. I could either smoke that last fourth or sell it.

I dropped out of high school a semester short 2 teachers talked me into finishing it, my auto shop teacher and my english teacher (English teacher made a field trip to see A Boy And His Dog, he was cool).

About a year out of high school (yeah, I graduated, albeit in December instead of June) I found out the guy I was buying my ounces of hash from was my auto shop teacher. A couple weeks later I found out his source was my english teacher.

It's a small world after all.... It's a small world!

If cattle are not a cash crop we'll probably end up eradicating them. I'm vegetarian because I never liked eating meat and cannot stand the smell of dead flesh or the thought of eating it. I recognise the right of others to do so and know necessary developmental protein requires supplements without meat and dairy products. Protein is required for healthy brain (IQ) and muscle development in humans. It does seem the far left are intent on retarding human beings and making it so unprofitable to rear cattle that the only place our grandchildren will see them is in the zoo, on the endangered species list. Unintended consequences indeed!

There are, however, some amino acids that are _very difficult_ to get without eating meat. Vegans require an extremely carefully planned diet, and I can't see how the schools can easily work into this, not on budgetary or time constraint reasons.

I'm also curious what percentage of students in NYC are vegans, for this to even be considered as a city-wide option. Most likely, I suspect, some politically connected person (perhaps a former superintendent?) has recently started a vegan food service business.

Except that brain is not made of protein - it's made of fat. So your statement is mostly false. And if you eat meat once a week (like a can of fish size, not 2lb steak), you get more than enough.

In the "good old days" people ate meat on the weekends, if that. And I don't think they were any stupider than they are today. The main difference is they weren't fat.

I'm a lifelong vegetarian--I decided to take no risks on finding out the hard way if I inherited the family inability to digest meat correctly--and I'm not particularly impressed, particularly since I am very used to groups like "The Coalition for Healthy School Food" to tend to cover for not an effort to actually provide students with school lunches that are healthy and edible, or if they are they have a strange, strange delusion that vegan=healthy. (No. No it does not.)

Bets are that this is going to end up like many a past effort to 'improve' school lunches--with a lot of food just plain tossed into the trash.

The one thing to consider with a vegetarian/vegan menu is that it does have the distinct benefit of drastically lowered odds of giving people food poisoning, and given some of the food-handling 'skills' I've seen in school cafeterias... So, well, if you're thinking 'healthy' mostly in the sense of 'will require you be very talented to make anybody sick via fucking up food safety,' a veg menu is an excellent choice. (Salad's about the only vegan option where you really need to worry; everything else, most of the problems will fall into 'cross contamination with meat' in origin, at least if you can't tell if it's good before you start eating...)
