Vincent Bernat writes in his blog about recent steps he took to increase privacy for his visitors and efficiency for the blog. He started out with excluding privacy-hostile modifications like Google Analytics, Disqus, third-party fonts, and much more. After reflection, he pared back and found the results better all around.

He addresses the following technologies one by one:

  • Analytics
  • Fonts
  • Videos
  • Comments
  • Search engine
  • Newsletter
  • JavaScript
  • Memento: CSP

THIS MAN HAS STOLEN MY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY.

WHILE I"VE GOT YOUR ATTENTION IT IS CRUCIALLY IMPORTANT TO ADD THE FOLLOWING TWO LINKS TO YOUR HOSTS FILE:

    127.0.0.1 WWW.GOOGLE-ANALYTICS.COM
    127.0.0.1 SSL.GOOGLE-ANALYTICS.COM

IF YOU DON"T KNOW WHAT A HOSTS FILE IS ASK SOMEONE WHO IS REALLY INTO YOUR COMPUTERS.

Amazon has force-reset an unknown number of accounts, after passwords may have been compromised.

A number of readers told ZDNet they received an email from Amazon saying the company has reset their account password. The message was also sent to their account message center on Amazon.com, and Amazon.co.uk, confirming the message is genuine.

    news from 2016: [dailydot.com]

A hacker claiming to have breached an Amazon server has released more than 80,000 usernames and passwords belonging to Amazon users after the online retail giant failed to heed his warnings about vulnerabilities in its servers.

That's the way all sites should be designed. All hosts should have privacy in mind. While compromises have to be made, website designers should opt for privacy whenever possible. That should be the "default" when considering any and all options. Don't invite Google, Amazon, Facebook, and dozens of advertisers into your site.

      Should...

But most people seem to have a sense of derision for anyone that wants privacy. The brainwashing and stupidity is real folks! Even smart techies will say "meh, I just assume everything is public so whatever" and "I don't care if they know I bought a shirt from amazon" or whatever. The "if you have nothing to hide" crowd really did a number on the citizenry, and people just EAT UP the law and order shit. Don't mind the routine human rights abuses or the routine punishment of "undersirables".

On a brighter note, the tide is shifting as the average citizens become more comfortable with technology and can begin seeing the need for privacy. Fuck the NSA agents who read this, they should realize they are now some of the worst scum on the planet even if .0001% of their intel leads to stopping some "bad stuff". Apparently violating basic decency for EVERYONE is worth the pittance of lives saved that won't ever compare to the lives lost to ridiculously more preventable / stupid reasons.

Oh yeah, don't forget to thank the TSA agent who gropes you because you just don't trust full-body millimeter wave tech. "It just goes through the first few mm of your skin though!" Oh thanks, skin cancer, that doesn't suck at all.

yeah but as a business owner I dont care about that

        i just want money

selling your info is the best way I can do that if I have no other model or products. i mean really the defaults just give it away and google and microsoft and others have complete guides on how to monetize people.

all this really reads to me is the guy's costs will go up because privacy isn't free--and i know its true because i am making money by essentially running code on my website that i didnt even write myself. i just cash the checks. i dont even care who the people are

i mean really. if you dont like it, then its not the websites that will have to change first. you have to get your friends and family to stop handing out their info about you for free.

A heavily obese man known as Edwardson stood on the city sidewalk. At first glance, this man's appearance was nothing special. But that was only someone's initial impression. The stunning truth was that diuretic feces constantly leaked from Edwardson's foul anus. Yes, this man was extraordinary; it was to the point where his mere presence could render a crowd awe-struck. And this great man was chortling. Why, one might ask, was this man chortling? It was due to the object lying at his feet.

First, the object - or, rather, the toy - was making sickening gurgling sounds due to the man's treatment of it. Second, a tremendous amount of blood was spurting out of several grievous wounds inflicted upon the toy. Third, the toy - also known as a "woman" - was about to be embraced by silence. These three facts resulted in heart-warming chortles. Edwardson chortled and chortled and chortled some more, all while liquid feces continued to drip from his anus. Finally, the toy broke, and it became clear it was time to depart. Yes, it was time to move on to greener pastures.

A man walked down the sidewalk chortling, leaving behind a broken, used-up toy. Every ponderous step this man took caused the countless rolls of fat adorning his huge body to jiggle. Where was this man - Edwardson - going, and what would he find there? Only two things were certain: His chortling would surely continue, and the liquid feces that made him the envy of the world would follow him...

Not just privacy either. All the third-party JavaScript he cut for privacy reasons is also murder on slower connections. Even 1.5mbps basic DSL can hardly handle a fully-laden Analytics+Fonts+Videos+Comments+Search JavaScript package, even when 4/5 of those things are probably coming from the same vendor. It's even worse for the poor saps that can't get better than dial-up or satellite internet.

Choosing NOT to inject your web site with malicious, third-party scripts will also improve performance and reliability. Of course by malicious I mean Google, Facebook, Amazon, 3rd party fonts, etc.

There is nothing wrong with writing a simple, static, HTML (and CSS if you must) web site and dropping it onto a VPS somewhere. You can host video as well. Come on. Admit it. Your blog isn't popular enough to worry about download caps even on fairly large videos.

Short version: Don't be a cut'n'paste moron like the ones you'd find on StackOverflow and a bunch of similar sites.

No, you don't need jQuery to create a manu with links to your three sub-pages. No, you don't need Youtube to host your cat videos. No, you don't need Google Analytics...

Take a look at what HTML5 and CSS actually can do. And stop reading StackOverflow, they only know how to cut'n'paste jQuery code.
