It looks like Netflix could be adding an animated "Diablo" series to its original programming lineup.

Boom! Studios founder Andrew "Andy" Cosby tweeted on Wednesday that he's in "final talks" to write and show-run the upcoming series from Activision and Netflix. "It's very exciting and I hope to the High Heavens it all works out," he said.

[...] There's no information currently on what the "Diablo" series might entail, but Cosby will be bringing his pedigree as the writer behind the new "Hellboy" film reboot to the project, which should make for the kind of gory and violent expectations fans have for any series that could be based on the "Diablo" series.

My inner geek and child both say "yay!" but my inner cynic says "oh no...".

Netflix Burns More Cash, Set to Spend $8 Billion on Original Content in 2018 26 comments

Netflix burns cash at a record pace, but investors love it

In its third quarter earnings statement on Tuesday, the company reported negative free cash flow of $859 million, the biggest figure in its history. Netflix continues to increase spending on original content as it seeks to compete with other players like Hulu, HBO and planned streaming services like Disney's, scheduled for next year. Netflix will reportedly spend at least $8 billion on content in 2018.

It would be a shame if someone were to pirate or illicitly stream that content.

Netflix has criticized the EU's local content quotas:

Netflix used its third quarter earnings report to criticize the European Union over a new content quota for streaming services. The EU, writes Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in the report, is "currently rewriting its audio visual rules" that will demand streaming services like Netflix "devote a minimum of 30 percent of their catalog to European works." Netflix's report acknowledged that catering to a specific audience encouraged more regional original programming for international audiences, but suggested that enforcing quotas on a streaming service could have unwanted negative effects.

Netflix is already set to spend $1 billion on European content this year.

Blizzard Announces a Mobile Version of Diablo 24 comments

Diablo is getting a 'full-fledged' mobile RPG

Blizzard is bringing Diablo to mobile devices, the company announced today during BlizzCon 2018. The game's creators promised a "full-fledged action RPG" called Diablo Immortal. Diablo Immortal picks up after Diablo II: Lord of Destruction and will launch for iOS and Android.

The mobile RPG is a massively multiplayer online action game; players will be able to drop in and out of groups and play through "dynamic events" as they travel through Sanctuary. Classes include monk, wizard, crusader, demon hunter, necromancer, and barbarian. Blizzard is currently allowing players to pre-register for a chance to join the game's upcoming beta.

Fingers do massive damage to phones.

You know that thing you liked at some point in the past? Now it's on netflix with a predefined transformation

*if it was animated, now it's live action
*if it was live action, it's anime
*If it was actually pretty well done, now it's fucking garbage

D2's cutscenes hold up pretty well, but I don't think anyone here will be optimistic about this Netflix series. Until we see a trailer at least.

    Andrew "Andy" Cosby? The hell?

Are we going to start seeing Robert "Bobby" Robins and Steven "Steve" Jobs?

Something like Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene makes sense. But I think I could figure out 'Andy' is short for 'Andrew' without the quotes.

Might be SEO. Catch searches both for Andrew Cosby and Andy Cosby. Robert "Bobby" Robbins yes; Steven "Steve" Jobs no. (Steve is a substring of Steven, but watch out for Steven "Stevie" Jobs and Stephen "Steve" Jobs.)

I recently played through ACT 2 and 3 of Diablo 3. The story construction and dialogue writing are terrible. Every aspect absolutely sucks with no redeeming qualities. Maybe someone at Netflix is a pissed off fan who wants to try the story with real writing talent.

Personally, I thought the series went kind of astray with the expansion for Diablo II. It kind of felt like the people who made the expansion weren't the same ones that made the original game, which made it seem kind of tacked on without a lot of thought. Diablo III wasn't a lot better.

There's also Diablo: The Hell mod (closed source [patreon.com]) with the Hell 2 especially shaping up to something comparable or better than contemporary titles like Path of Exile and Grim Dawn.

I found D2 very boring. It didn't have any story, sandbox, or crawl worth mentioning and all you did was item runs and grind for XP. The games might share a franchise, but the fact enemies don't respawn in D1 outside the NG/NG+ should tell you everything you need to know if you ever played other ARPGs.
