Intel and ESL Commit $100 Million to eSports

Intel and eSports organizer and production company ESL have announced this week a commitment to invest at least $100 million to "shape the future landscape of eSports through innovative technology, tournaments and events" through 2021 in what the companies described as "the biggest brand and technology eSports partnership in history." That's a lot of money, but it almost doesn't seem like it when you consider the duo's belief that eSports will become a billion-dollar industry. Almost.

This partnership isn't new. Intel and ESL have worked together on the Intel Extreme Masters tournament series for Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) and other titles since 2006. Intel also sponsors the ESL One circuit for CS:GO and Dota 2, the ESL Pro League for CS:GO and the multi-tourney Intel Grand Slam that challenged CS:GO teams to win four of 10 events in 2018 in exchange for $1 million and gold bars engraved with their names.

What happens when the publisher of a video game widely used in esports withdraws multiplayer matchmaking, withdraws broadcast rights, or withdraws the game from sale? Watch the legal sparks fly.

      withdraws multiplayer matchmaking

Shouldn't players be able to choose their own spouses? Don't most people choose only one partner?

Most publishers want, and even encourage, their game's use in e-sports. Nintendo is just being Nintendo.

        Nintendo is just being Nintendo.

There's no reason to single out Nintendo over this. Kyle Orland's article further mentions that Capcom requires a royalty for Street Fighter series tournaments. Activision Blizzard has had a copyright dispute with a Korean league [wikipedia.org]. Wild Games Studios (1 [dailydot.com]) and Campo Santo (2 [www.cbc.ca]) have issued notices of claimed infringement for gameplay videos, as has Sega on more than one occasion (3 [destructoid.com], 42 [youtube.com]). When YouTube Gaming debuted, users noticed that its Content ID was allegedly overly zealous in blocking material on which a third party has asserted copyright (5 [gamerant.com]).

Or did all of these occur so long ago that the parties responsible for these threats are no longer with the company?

Kyle Orland's article further mentions that Capcom requires a royalty for Street Fighter series tournaments.

Nothing wrong with that. I said they support them, I didn't say they did it for free, especially with big leagues.

Activision Blizzard has had a copyright dispute with a Korean league [wikipedia.org]

That was a single incident, and if you dig into it, it had to do with a breakdown in negotiations with Blizzard over royalties. The rest of your examples are about streaming and mostly around let's play videos, not organized e-sports legues. Or do you know the difference?

Capcom requires a royalty for Street Fighter series tournaments.

            Nothing wrong with that.

When Capcom quotes a royalty in excess of what a particular tournament's organizer would reasonably be able to pay, or when a prospective tournament organizer cannot find a rate sheet in the first place, something wrong becomes detectable. In addition, esports compete with ball sports, which have no owner. For example, the USTA has no legal right to a royalty for the manufacture of tennis equipment or the broadcast of matches.

            That was a single incident

Courts build precedent around single incidents. So do licensing departments that demand "most favored" status.

The rest of your examples are about streaming and mostly around let's play videos, not organized e-sports legues.

Both apples and oranges are examples of edible fruits of trees. Both disputes over walkthrough videos and disputes over esports streams and VODs are examples of disputes over public performance rights in video games.

Intel seems to be making all sorts of announcements in the last few days.

I wonder if the timing has anything to do with the AMD announcement?

If so, then the AMD's new gadget may have been more significant that thought.

This is Intel flexing its ill-gotten money.

If it's about AMD products at all, it's intended to brainwash gaymers into avoiding AMD and paying the Intel tax. Which may include discrete graphic cards soon.

Let's hope the league collapses into a dust of sex allegations.

I was thinking of creating a new open source CoC, since another one is so desperately needed, but now I see my efforts might be required elsewhere.

I think a truly ideal CoC would be one whose mere existence is a violation of itself.

At first I thot, of course eSpurts needs a CoCk. Look at all the sexual harassment of women in video gaming and eSpurts.

Then I realized that open sores needs the CoCk more. They are already a sausage fest. There's money in open sores, but a gurl can get a lot more money showing off her goods on Twatch to teenage boys. If she is good enough to compete at tournaments, she can amass a legion of male fans to give her donations and gifts. She can also seduce more successful male gaymers to get their money too. Intel has dumped $100 million that will eventually make its way to CoCk-hungry dick-crazy gamer sluts.

Why would any gurl choose open sores to make her money? It's more work and playing video games while shaking your ass is more fun. No gamer gurl will put up with a tiny community of insufferable nerds when they can whore out to the gaymer majority. Open sores must have the CoCk and worship any woman who hangs around them. But gurl gamers will always be ready for eSpurts no matter how toxic it is.
