Where ordering cannabis is easy as booking a taxi

Ordering cannabis in Los Angeles is now as easy as booking a taxi. Click on an app, choose your preferred product, pay for it and then sit back and wait for it to be delivered to your door.

Eaze is just one of several firms taking advantage of the legalisation of cannabis, for which the people of California voted overwhelmingly in favour in 2016. Since January last year, when the use of recreational cannabis became legal across the state, the start-up has seen an 80% increase in sign-ups. It had run a limited medicinal cannabis delivery service since 2014, with anyone who wanted to order having to download medical evidence that they needed it.

[...] The products Eaze sells range from $15 (£12) to $50, but are then hit with an additional 20% to 40% tax rate, depending on jurisdiction. "Our biggest competition is still the illicit market. One in five people are still shopping from there because of the taxes," said Ms Shiravi.

Here in Ontario, legal weed is generally 8-12/g, with black market stuff probably half that. Even excluding delivery and tax, these are pretty high prices.

Yea, the gov't weed is expensive and it's SUPER dry. It crumbles in your hand.

I also have a feeling that they weigh it when it's not fully dry, then dry the shit out of it. For how dry it is, I feel like I should be getting more. I don't have an accurate enough scale though, so I could be wrong...

if pot from Ontario is similar to the government pot from Québec, the packaging is accurate.
I weighed mine and it weight exactly what was written 3.50 but was fuckin too dry and one container felt like the bottom of a bag. not premium quality weed like the stuff that I get at that price on ganjaexpress.ca

To Americans confused by cultural differences: 8-12 canadian dollars is 646-969 yen. A "g" or "graham" is the weight of a grammy award, which all canadians, including the ridiculously untalented Justin Bieber, receive at puberty.

Wow, that sucks. Here in Washington state, the weed is the same (and daily sales that make it cheaper) than the street price. The quality is high and the selection in the stores is incredible.
Now this is on the eastern side of the state, I really don't know about Seattle or the west side, but here, the black market is essentially dead.
      Example: today's message from GreenLeaf:

      Fresh drop!
      From Virginia Enterprises.
$10 & $20 grams of concentrate, couple of different strains THC 57% to 77%
Check out our favorite Friday selection, ask your Budtender! Open till 11:45 PM.

I can get decent (26+%) ounces for $50-$70 and great stuff for around $100 an oz.

Thirty or so varieties, oils, waxes, edibles, drinkables....it's fucking heaven.
Yeah, we have delivery as well, I don't use it because I pass 7 shops on the way to work (and 12 espresso stands) so a 10 minute stop to browse it all is nothing.

We started out with a government imposed 26% (IIRC) sales tax that we voted down the first election after legalization. Of course our idiot government was salivating over the tax money they were expecting and way overspent. This was what caused all the teachers strikes and unfinished road projects a few years ago.

      We the people won!

The retail weed in the Seattle area is also similarly awesome for the same reasons (quality, selection, and there are also lots of local stores to choose from).

        > We started out with a government imposed 26% (IIRC) sales tax that we voted down the first election after legalization
I didn't know that. I wondered what it was that brought prices down. I figured it was just competition or something.

Both contributed. We also had a major weed glut that resulted in more licenses being given out to absorb the production. That also contributes to the number of neighborhood weed shops that popped up everywhere.

Yes, and the win was not the school problems and road issues caused by short sighted, greedy politicians with dollar signs for eyes.
It was in rejecting a tax imposed by the government and not voted on by the people. We tend to pass taxes with specific goals, school funding, community centers, arts. But we reject imposed taxes. A couple of decades ago we rolled back our ridiculously expensive automobile registration fees for the same reason.
The win is in restricting the government though actions of the people. Same way we got legal weed.
          So yeah. Big fuckin' win.

Are you confusing representative democracy with direct democracy? I know you don't even have representative democracy, but at least you pretend. You've (the country) never even pretended to have direct democracy, so why do you (personally) think that's the system you have?

Back in the early 1980s, one could make a phone call (777-CASH, IIRC) and have cannabis delivered. That was generally more expensive than actually going to to a cannabis retailer, but quite convenient. And there are even more folks providing such services today.

Oh, and cannabis is still illegal where I live.

I wonder if these folks have patented this incredibly unique process? "Method and system for ordering and arrranging delivery of cannabis using a personal tracking device."

I wonder if they also deliver munchies along with the cannabis. Nope not gonna read TFA to find out. ;)

Came here to say something similar. Early 1980s I drove to cross country to CA for the first time. Stayed a few days with a cousin who lived in Huntington Beach (LA area). One evening he made a phone call, I didn't pay much attention. About a half hour later there was a buzzing noise outside, he stepped out, and back in with a nickel bag. Delivery by moped.

These days it might be silent -- electric bike or e-scooter delivery?

but are then hit with an additional 20% to 40% tax rate, depending on jurisdiction.

Effective tax rates on cannabis products are far higher: because the sellers cannot deduct many normal business expenses, the prices have to be much higher to compensate for the excess taxes that the sellers pay.

I thought that was how you booked some "ride hailing service" which are legally distinct from "taxis" and to get a taxi you either call some number have one dispatched to you or stick you hand in the air as one drives by, neither of which matches the description in the summary.
