(This is semi-advertising, but is definitely interesting to many "nerds," and one of those "why did nobody tell me these things" when I first heard about it. Who says advertising is bad?)

The "Awesome Games Done Quick" (AGDQ) marathon began on Sunday (1/6). This week-long 24/7 stream showcases people finishing games as quickly as possible, as in finishing the game Portal in about 10 minutes.

It is a semi-annual gaming event run for charity, which along with its partner "Summer Games Done Quick," (SGDQ) raises millions of dollars of donations for two charities. The charity for AGDQ is the Prevent Cancer Foundation. However, the actual event itself is free to watch online; no donation needed.

You can find more information on their website: https://gamesdonequick.com/

And/or join them on their Twitch stream.

If you're new to this kind of thing, I'd take a look at the schedule and see if there's something on that list that you've at least played. If you have, I think you'll get more enjoyment out of the run.

Oh, and the TASBot block on Friday is always pretty entertaining even if you aren't much for video games at all (but still enjoy computers). TAS stands for "tool assisted speedrun". Normally this would be something you'd do with recorded inputs on an emulator, but TASBot is hooked up to the console it plays on. With perfect inputs, you can find a lot of interesting glitches in these older games. One of the ones TASBot has had the most fun with is arbitrary code execution [youtube.com] in Super Mario World, where you get the arbitrary code into game with perfect controller inputs.

I don't know what they have planned for this year, but the times they have listed for the games they will be running means it will be amusing.
