Apple AR glasses tipped to launch in 2020 as an iPhone accessory (archive)

Apple's long-rumored augmented reality glasses could be with us as early as next year, according to reputable industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo says manufacturing on the AR specs will get underway at the end of this year or the start of the next one, according to money.udn.com. He also says that they will be reliant on a connected iPhone to do a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of processing and connectivity.

That should ensure the glasses themselves stay relatively lightweight and comfortable to wear – more Google Glass than Microsoft HoloLens.

So they're going to wirelessly tether their AR glasses to an iPhone? I think there's a reason why Google and Microsoft don't do it that way: bandwidth and latency. I don't think Bluetooth has enough bandwidth to be able to transmit data to and from the glasses and phone fast enough for AR processing, given the kind of miserable bandwidth I get from Bluetooth tethering. Wi-Fi might have enough bandwidth and good enough latency, but judging from how much battery drain you get from running a Wi-Fi hotspot on a phone, that could be very costly in terms of battery life for both phone and glasses. It would be very un-Apple indeed to resort to something as "inelegant" as a wired tether.

the battery life won't be a problem, because the glasses will just constantly show pretty pictures, and validate the user's world veiw, possibly just by being mirrors

Will this be the point at which people finally stop buying things they don't need from Apple?
If you've got the phone, the airpods, and the watch, do you also need the glasses?
    I guess we'll see.

That is exactly what I was wondering.

This might be the point where we start to see the beginning of the end of Apple. Of course they still make an awful lot of money and have huge cash reserves, so it will take a long time to run through it all, but they really need something new and wonderful to keep ahead of the pack don't they?
